I have a Dell Inspiron 14z and it recently started acting up. I would turn it off and hours later i would try to turn it on but i would press the power button and the buttons would light up but the screen would stay blank and nothing would happen. At first i would hear 4 beeps and it supposedly meant it was a problem with memory or RAM but i took out both RAM cards and put 1 in at a time to see which one was faulty but both seemed to work. I then Put them in the other slot, and again, they worked. i decided to put both back in their original places and i turned on my computer. It worked fine and everything is ok. I just want to know if the beep code thing is screwed up on my computer or if i have a virus or anything. I'm not a computer wiz. I also have another post if you could help me out on that as well.

Solution
1| DO NOT mix and match ram sticks. That is probably the primary reason you're here to begin with. Remove the add on memory which you salvaged off of the Toshiba unit and run your Inspiron as is with the bundled sticks of ram.
2| You should consider ram upgrades to be likewise to purchasing shoes. If you loose one out of a pair, you have to purchase a brand new pair regardless of which foot's shoe you loose.
3| Based off of pointer 2, you should invest in buying a kit which will be a pair of ram sticks sold as a bundle. Depending on your model/SKU number you can go to 8GB/16Gb's of ram. That will depend entirely on your laptop's SKU/model number(not just the series number) since there have been a plethora of version within...

It's also good practice to update your BIOS prior to when you move for a new ram kit.
