Dell inspiron 1525 screen blank, vista wont load

Hello,
my fiancee's dell inspiron 1525 wont load windows vista on boot. every suggestion online has to do with replacing the screen or faulty hard drive.. running the diagnostics tools the screen is fine, boot menu, default settings, ahtm (?) to ata, flash cache mod disabled, all that jazz, nothing is working.
Only thing that looks like a promising next step is a windows recovery cd, and running it through the boot menu.
Does this sound like the right direction? and where/what would be a typical recovery program to try?
