I did a post some time ago about upgrading this old 2008 Inspiron 545 Desktop I have into a Budget Gaming Machine but before I could do that, I all of a sudden started getting Blue Screen of Death after Blue Screen of Death.. They're now coming at a rate of 2 every hour.

I know Blue Screens often mean different things and have different error info and as much as I'd like to list them all, I think I can just safely say that I've had the full list given that it's a different error code each time.

After several trips to my local Tech-Guru and numerous of my own attempts to replace components, I'm pretty much concluding that it's dead and I will be replacing it.

My main motive for this post is simply just to find out if it is a fixable problem in the right circumstances or if the machine has just run it's course.. Sort of a learning exercise if anything.

Hope you can shed some light!

there may be a trick or fix that may get you going but .......

some models of store bought computers [dell.hp,acer,ect..] may come with a ''locked or fixed'' bios and may not allow you to change certain hardware as a video card.. this is done to protect them from undue warranty claims and refunds .this is not done to hurt you but to protect them. you really need to see if that upgrade has been proven to work in your model first before you invest money in it .. there are a lot of these threads here at toms to look at some models will allow upgrades and some dont.. and a lot of guys here say ya ya ya when is really no no no...it would be sad you spent $200 on a card that wount post after you installed it as most find out. then get told its your psu and you spend more and end up right back where you are now, but its up to you good luck..

you got to know the the boards in these computers are not like the ones we use to do custom builds witch are open to upgrading with in the boards compatibly . the bios is custom made for there design and just for the parts they authorize to be used on there computers there only guaranteed to work as is out of the box as you bought it ,..

I did run into the problem of the Locked Bios while attempting to run CHK DSK scans and system restores, failing every time or not even bothering to begin... Money hasn't been too much of a problem given that I've used trusted suppliers who refund me every time something goes south but I more or less learned the hard way with not having too much choice in replacing things...

It's just generally a nuisance as it has been a very trusty computer up until now.. Nevertheless, my replacement is going to be a custom build.
