I was given a Dell Inspiron 580 without a Hard Drive. The original owner gave up trying to get the 1TB Serial ATA-300 and it's replacements from Dell to work, apparently there were many replacements, tech calls, tech visits etc.

I do not want to replace it with the official Dell replacement since that was proven to be a problem.

Any suggestions out there? Or successes with other drives?

Dell Inspiron 580
i5
Intel H57 chipset
Intel GMA HD integrated video
6GB ram
300 watt

Hard Drive was originally a 1TB Serial ATA-300, 7 pin, mfr # 7030w dell #341-9868

It is weird problem, the HDD. In question is no name provided here http://www.serversupply.com/MFGR/DELL/HARD%20DRIVES%20W-TRAY/SATA-II/1000GB-7200RPM/341-9868.htm unless someone will come up with better idea I would recommend to get WD or Seagate 500 GB HDD from the local store to try, so that you can easily return it. There are so many possibilities, so we need to know what does it mean not working, error messages? Not working is very broad thing, maybe SATA controller, maybe motherboard?!

I agree which is why I came here. All I was told that the original owner spent so much time (months apparently) working with Dell trying to get the machine to work that after several hard drive replacements, several visits from techs, that he took out the last drive and shot it. literally. Then he gave the rest of the machine to my son. When I asked about the "whats, hows and errors" he got a look on his face and I just thanked him for the machine and moved on.
