Hey.
A few days back I installed MSI GTX 750ti Low Profile GPU in my Inspiron 580s and was disappointed to see my i3-550 bottlenecking it in many games.
Since I don't wanna change motherboard my only option is Intel i5-750S, cuz of LGA 1156 socket and my limited PSU of 250 Watts which also I'm unwilling to upgrade. Can anyone tell me does the processor in Inspiron 580s (slimline) is upgradable? Has anyone ever done it?And does my motherboard support it? Finally how high chances will there be of destroying my PSU? The net addition after processor change will be of 9 Watts. Links below.
Thanks in advance

Solution

Look at benchmarks between the 2 CPUs.

Generally, most current games run on 2 cores and don't put all 4 threads to use. For those that do put 4 threads to use, the i3 has hyperthreading. In this case, you want STRONG single cores, rather than weak multiple cores.

The first gen i-series processors, short of the high-clocked i7 variants, were generally quite weak compared to Sandy Bridge and upwards.
