Dell Inspiron 6000 problem installing Windows xp

Trying to do a fresh install Windows Xp everything works fine until installing devices time left approx 34 minutes then screen goes blank

The screen typically would go black during that process, but I take it that the reason you posted here was because it hung there and stopped working?

yeah it just hangs and stops

Typically that could indicate a hardware issue of some sort and there's not much hardware you can pull from a laptop to test.
Only suggestion that I can make is to try the installation again removing one RAM stick at a time, or even replacing both if you are able with one stick of known good RAM. For XP, as little of 64Mb will do.
