Hi guys, I'm looking to upgrade the CPU on my Dell Inspiron 620 which at the moment has an Intel Core i3-2120 Processor and is not good enough for my needs. I need to know which i5 Processor I can buy for it that is DEFINITELY COMPATIBLE with it, as I already bought one for it the other day but had to send it back because it wasn't compatible with it. So can you guys please suggest suitable i5 Processors which you know are DEFINITELY COMPATIBLE with my Dell Inspiron 620? Thanks.

I bought an i5-3570 a few days ago which I had to send back and I know now that the reason it didnt work is because it was Ivy Bridge and not Sandy Bridge.

I found that your motherboard is on H61 chip with support for (quoted from some Dell 620 spec info site)
Processor Support Socket LGA 1155. (Sandy Bridge)
* Intel Core i5- 2500, 2320, 2310, 2300
So one of above Sandy Bridge i5 model would be good, earlier you probably bought i5 3470 or something similar which is Ivy Bridge - newer generation.
If you still have stock Radeon 6450 (that was in that pc) and you need more gpu power in games you should consider buying better graphic card, but is you have standard 300W PSU this will limit to older/not powerfully cards.

Hi Dragon, I bought an i5-3570 a few days ago which I had to send back and I know now that the reason it didnt work is because it was Ivy Bridge and not Sandy Bridge.
Hi Dreamer, I actually bought an AMD Radeon HD 7750 Graphics card which I have installed so will any of the processors you suggested work with that graphics card?

What are your needs actually? is it for games or?

Yes I will be using it for games, also for livestreaming and video editing/rendering as I am a YouTuber. I know you might recommend an i7 for this but an i7 is out of my budget.

You could try get one second handed or sell your system as it is and use that money to get a new PC, save up for one. Second handed sandy bridge processors go for really cheap sometimes, you could try and hunt one down, i am a Youtuber myself as well.

Got 250 subscribers in a month so im quite satisfied, how is it going for you? with my system i process 2gb of video in approx 5minutes. I also have a 150mbit stable connection so im quite lucky, did build my system just for that.

I see, yes I only have 50 subscribers and I've been going a year now, so I've not been lucky with subscribers. Although I do have 18,000+ views which is ok I guess. As for your suggestion about buying a new PC, I dont really feel it is necessary to fork out the money for a new PC when all I need is a new processor for my current one - I have everything I need already, I just need a new processor and I was wondering if the i5-2500 is definately compatible with my motherboard?

Yes its compatible :)! what content do you upload then? are you using the right search words on youtube? you are probably doing something others do as well on Youtube. I picked a niche segment which is really cool to do.
If you need any other tips feel free to ask, even my private account has over 100k viewers and 50 subscribers+... thats kind of weird though being on there for a year and only 18k. 0.o

Such cpu will be compatible (thats info from Dell 620 specification), still if you want you may provide more info about motherboard - use 'cpu-z' app to get info. Another thing, that someone mentioned, that Sandy Bridge isn't sold now normally, it was removed from the market to make place for newer cpu's, so you should consider buying used, there should be even some with valid warranty.
And about other options, better AMD cards and Geforce's with CUDA can be used to hardware accelerate video encoding on some software, so such card would really help and speed up all jobs. But then the problem would be your PSU, theoretically it's from brand made pc so it's better than some 'noname', but this can be a problem. All depends on your budget and prices of used sandy bridge..
Note that newer Intel Haswell cpu's have video encoding chip that can be used to even better performance, but I'm not sure if it can be used when you have dedicated graphic card.
Check if your video editing software make use of mentioned CUDA, AMD APP technologies.

Hi Dreamer, and thanks for that - basically I think what you're saying is that my graphics card is ok, in amongst all that technical jargon. I have found a new i5-2500 on Amazon actually (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B004FA8NNW/ref=gno_cart_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE) so would that be a good choice for my Inspiron 620?

Also Dreamer, I read somewhere that my motherboard can only take a 65-watt processor, whereas isnt the i5-2500 a 95-watt processor? Will it work on that basis, or is that not right at all?

Ah I misunderstood you, you already have that card and it's working ok, so good, and that Radeon 7750 have AMD APP acceleration, so look to your video editing software, most payed popular software support that technology.
That cpu will work but I think it's price is little to high, other thing that all i5 are more power demanding processors than i3, and under full load this could be a problem and you PSU may be to weak.
Check this topic: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/answers/id-1725961/dell-inspiron-620-psu-blew-installed-corsair-psu-system-longer-works.html
also hd7750, i3 but weaker PSU 250W, you have 300W but i5 needs more power so note that new PSU may be needed finally. I do not want to scare you but only warn about such possibility.

Edit: use 'cpu-z' app (or other to get spec) and post full motherboard description, cause it may vary, that Dell 620 was in several versions, some were with i5-2500.

Ok so, basically it all comes down to this - in your opinion, should I buy a new processor for my PC which already has everything, or go for a completely different and new computer with the specs I want?

Ok, I've used CPU-Z and here are the full specs - Intel Core i3 2120 CPU @ 3.30GHz, Sandy Bridge, Max TDP 65 Watts, Socket 1155 LGA, Technology 32nm, Motherboard is a Dell Inc. 0GDG8Y Sandy Bridge Rev 09, Southbridge is Intel H61 Rev B3, BIOS is A10, Graphic Interface is PCI-Express x16, Memory is DDR3 4 GB - is that everything you need to know or do you need more info?

Where you found that your motherboard can only support 65W cpu? It should handle i5 without problem, same Dell 620:
http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=2250815
http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/287004-32-does-motherboard-support
both i5 working without problems, but on weaker graphic cards so I wouldn't risk and best would be buy new PSU. All depends on your budget, best option is buy used i5 sandy bridge but with warranty for good money, sell that i3 and buy better PSU.

Ok thanks, but one problem, if the fact that my motherboard only supports 65 Watts is wrong, then why does it say on CPU-Z that my Max TDP is 65 Watts?

Ok well thanks for answering my question :) now onto the next, which PSU is suitable for my computer, or are they not as picky as processors? For instance, is this one a good choice? http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cooler-Master-Elite-Power-Supply/dp/B004XG6I1W/ref=sr_1_2?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1389620502&sr=1-2&keywords=500w+psu

or can you suggest more suitable ones if not? Muchas gracias.

Also, one final thing about my motherboard that I need to know - apparently the i5-2500 has SATA II? Do you know what this is, apparently my Motherboard has B3 revision so does this mean SATA issues are fixed? Also, if the wattage for this i5-2500 is 95 and my processor at the moment is only 65 Watts, then am I gonna need a new PSU for sure or will it cope?

It will be surely enough, but I'm not sure if it has additional pci-e power connector - it should have one, best would be check for better price at pc/electro shop, personally I have this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Be-Quiet-BN106-Power-Supply/dp/B002JWLN5S/ref=pd_rhf_dp_p_t_1_XSHS
I bought it for little less than £40 (on promo in Polish store) so you may look at some sites for better offerts. You may also search here on forum to Dell 620 related topics and see what PSU other user have.
What sata issues? i'm not expert on that topic.

Well I dont know about the SATA issue so thats why I was asking, but if you dont know then I'll have to ask around. Basically, all I'm asking is as the i5-2500 is 95 watts and my current processor is 65 watts will I need a new PSU or will it be ok?

Thanks for the advice mate, but take a look at this article I just found - http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20110707125228AAR1QTJ

Its interesting what they say because what they are saying is that the graphics card draws the most power and not the processor, but its interesting because they are saying that I need a 500 W PSU for AMD Radeon HD graphics card in the 6000 series! Well I have an AMD Radeon HD 7750, which of course is the next series up, and that works fine on my current 300 W PSU! It doesnt get warm or anything, in fact I just felt the panels and fans on my pc and they are expelling cool air! Do you think on that basis it could cope?

Such 'articles' are .. ;]
Radeon 7750 draws >2 time more power than 6450 (probably you had it earlier), but the next thing would be that i5, and for it you will need better PSU. Even 400W would be sufficient (I was running 30$ noname 400W psu with 70W cpu, hr6670, 2x hdd and 2 optical drives without problem), but better psu like 500w or even 550w with at least one pci-e power connector may be usefully in future, some day you may want to switch from that radeon 7750 to something more powerfully, and then you wont be needing to spend $$ again for little better psu, and the difference in price should not be big so it's worth it. That all about that topic ;-)
If you want to find best budget psu search forum, keep $$ in mind, you may look for example at this topic: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/394002-33-upgrading-dell-inspiron-graphics-card

You have been most helpful mate - I will buy that i5-2500 and then get a 400 W or 500 W PSU - I think the one I sent you in the link is a good choice :)
