Dell inspiron n7110 screen off but computer runninfg

Ok guys I'm really stuck with this... 🙁

Ok so basically, last night I was on my laptop and when I noticed the brightness was decreasing however this fixed in a couple minutes. Then a couple hours later,when I moved the lid, the screen went off completely, I mean pitch black with no back light. I put the lid down so my laptop shuts down and rebooted it and my screen was back on again, however as soon as I even tapped the lid, it went off. Today the screen refuses to come back on again. I have opened my laptop up to see if there is some sort of connection problem with the lcd cable however i didnt see any sort of problem. Hoping that I had fixed the problem by reconnecting the cable, i turned my laptop on again but it still refused to come on. However i noticed that if i shine a light onto the screen, I can see a very very dim light. I have connected the laptop using a HDMI cable to my TV and it displays the image perfectly but nothing on the actual laptop screen. I am completely stuck and have no idea what the problem is given that I have very very little experience with computers.

If all the associated cabling is fine, then backlight or inverter going bad, most likely. Although if the display is LED backlit, rather than CCFL backlit, it shouldn't have an inverter.

EDIT: Turns out it is LED backlit. The back light comes as part of the screen assembly. Here is a place I've had good luck with:

ANOTHER EDIT: Just reread your post, and I may have misunderstood. When you shine a flashlight on the laptop screen (without the hdmi cable to the external monitor/tv plugged in) , do you see a very faint image on the screen if you look very closely, or is it blank?

Hi, before buying a new screen, verify the cable for the screen, look at the hinge where the cable is passing to see if the cable is not damage.

When I opened the laptop up and reconnected the lcd cable, it looked fine to me. However I dont really know what "fine" looks like for these laptop cables. Wouldnt there be a problem with the external monitor if there was an issue with the wires? It deliver perfect image to my TV but my laptop screen refuses to come on :/

You wont have any problem from the screen cable on the external monitor, they are using different connectors. But you could have the screen cable pinched at the hinge for the lid. You will have to remove the cable and look to see an area different on the cable.

Sounds abit complex to actually remove the entire cable seeing as I only removed the screen which was just a simple disconnection from the cable :/ Would I have to completely take the laptop apart and take the cable off?

You're welcome! That laptop is definitely still worth the cost of replacing the screen, in my opinion.

EDIT: Just a final thought: You could always borrow a multimeter from someone to test if the backlight cable is getting power to the screen, just to be ABSOLUTELY sure the cabling is okay.

Untill you buy and install the screen, you can use it conneted to external monitor or LCD TV using VGA or HDMI cable. You also test the graphics card (I think that is no problem there) and keep it working fine. If it doesn't work at first try you should have a Fn funtion to change the display to external.
