My 10-year-old Dell Inspiron running WIN 10 home went to sleep for no reason. I was in the middle of my work, and all of a sudden the screen turned black with no response to the keyboard or mouse. The power light is still on. I have to hold the power button down for a few seconds to completely power down the box. When I power it back up, most of the time it recovers to where it was before the failure. That's why I think that it has gone to sleep. I had the power option set to never 'turn off the screen' or 'sleep' for both plugged-in and battery. It still failed.
I had the laptop plugged in 99.9% of the time. So the battery always shows 100% charged.
I looped the Dell diagnostic for an hour with no failure.
I tried to run the laptop without the battery and the problem did not happen. I am not surprised that the battery is bad/dead on a ten-year-old laptop. But I was running with the battery plugged in all the time. it was not a 'No power' failure. It must be some signal telling the computer to go to sleep and not wake up. A replacement battery is only $30 from Amazon. But I Like to find out if there is some other issue before buying the battery.
