Dell monitors?

I'm thinking about upgrading my CRT to a widescreen LCD. The Dell 2405FPW caught my eye because of the low costs, but I'm hearing a lot of talk about how it gives off a high-pitched squeal. People on the Dell forum seem to suggest that it's a power supply/heat issue.

Has anyone heard that Dell has fixed this issue? Also, I've heard that they now have a similar model 2407WFP, but this monitor seems to have a firmware issue (which causes color banding issue) and that it forces you to have high-definition content protection (HDCP). I'm against HDCP in principle but I've also heard that Windows Vista is going to require HDCP, and as much as people rail against Microsoft, my circumstances demands I keep them as an option.

If Dell 24" widescreens are a bad deal, then what other monitors have other people had success with? Tom's Hardware seemed to like the Sony SDM-P234, and I've liked Viewsonic's products in the past. My current rig is powered by an ATI x800 XT.

i have never had any problems with the dell. i would however vote against you getting it unless you only play old games or none at all. it takes quite alot of gfx power to use the 1920 x 1200 in games.

perhaps the dell 2005 or 2007 would be better.

what sort of activities do you use your comp with?

Right now, I play WoW, and general computing tasks. I thought an x800xt 256MB was decent gfx power. Currently, the rest of my box is a 3GHz Pentium 4, 1GB RAM. I'm waiting for the next set of hardware (dual core CPUs, DDR2, SLI, PCI-express, ATX/BTX MBs, etc) to stabalize before making a big leap forward.

you should be able to get wow on it. the x800 is a good card but when i use the stress test in HL2:LC i get about 55FPS at native res. it tkaes alot of power to get decent FPS at least in an shooter like dod:s

I have 3 Dell LCD wide screen monitors and don't have this problem with any of them.

(I play UT2K4 on the Dell 3007WFP at 2560 x 1600 and BF2 at 2048 x 1560)...

rich stop with the dpi. i have said it in the other thread. it stands for dot per inch. the dell only has about 9200. just say 1920 x 1200 native.

Yeah I just got me the 2407WFP, $789 shipped with 5 year warranty thanks to the current dell home customers discount.

Most beautiful thing I have ever used, not noisy, no ded pixels, revision A03 so no banding problem, plenty of USB ports and 9-in-2 card reader.

I know this thread is old but this monitor is the BOMB.

now I gotta figure out how to get the games to play in 75Hz instead of 60Hz at 1920x1200...

is 60 FPS with v-sync on not enough or something. aprat from that i can think of no reason to try it.

well that's the thing, I don't think I have v-sync enabled. I was just reading about that and I need to try it out cause I notice quite a bit of tearing and I think my x1950xtx is enough to sustain the 60FPS with v-sync on.

i hear people mention the use of triple buffering but i can't do that with 16x AF can I?

well, if you don't use v-sync then upping the refresh rate does nothing on an LCD. AFAIK, using tripple buffering is not affected by AF. as long as you have enough vid memory which your card has tripple buffering will help when using v-sync, however unless you use something like dxtweaker or ATI tray tools, you cannot use it with direct x games.

still, AFAIK filtering the textures using AF does nt mean you cannot use tripple buffering. at least i have not heard of it affecting it.

oh ok, then i'll try triple buffering with v-synch tonight, with 512mb of RAM that card better have enough to handle it 😛

yes 24" monitors are great although take a hell of alot of power to run games on. still once you get over the size you begin to wonder how people can use 17" ones or worse 15" which i have to use at work. it is terrible.

I'm lucky I got a 21' CRT at work, although it's an old piece of junk it's big. I used to have a 17'CRT at home though and there is simply no going back to that now that I have 24' widescreen
