I have a Dell omniplex 780 with 4 x 1gb memory. I have tried to update to a 8gb stick with no avail. The monitor lights up and the computer then shuts down. Its ok with the 4 x 1gb but not the new one. The clock speeds are the same DDR3 106000.

Which form factor in the OptiPlex 780 do you currently have? FYI, the 780 OptiPlex's don't run on DDR3 ram, they operate off of DDR2 ram, page-9.
The ram that's is in the dell is indeed DDR3 ram as I have just checked.

Not all memory is the same, it has to be said compatible with the board by the Vendor. When they first made DDR3 it was low density then later on it was cheaper to make high density (fewer chips) but the old boards can't run the high density.
They can have up to 4-4GB modules DDR3 low density memory according to Crucial https://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-upgrade-for/Dell/optiplex-780-mini-tower
The memory modules in my 775 boards will work also but they a re discontinued and you have to by them used on Ebay.
Ballistix Sport BLS2KIT4G3D1609DS1S00 is the kit number for a 4GB set= to 8GB.
This will work also https://www.newegg.com/g-skill-8gb-240-pin-ddr3-sdram/p/N82E16820231635
