Hello,

I am having a big confusion with the ram in this system (Dell Optiplex 380 MT), one of the dell manuals says that it supports a total of 4GB DDR3 (2GB per module) but others such as tech specs says upto 8GB DDR3 (4GB per module), so they are having a major conflict here. Even the mobo manufacturers such as Foxconn, GIGABYTE with G41 Chipsets support 8GB DDR3 (I assume mine is from foxconn because I see its label on it).

Now I am having 2x2GB DDR3 running in Dual Channel, they are not matched pairs though one is from Kingston other one is from Hynix, but the BIOS says they are running in Dual Channel at 1066Mhz. Now I am willing to upgrade to 8GB so I tested one of these
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820139046
but failed as it gave 1 and 3 diagnostic lights with beeps.

Now folks on Dell forums are suggesting that only the Crucial sticks would work, but unfortunately I cant find them here, and why on earth brand is a concern here? I can get another stick which is from samsung and is PC3-12800 if I remember correctly so should I give it a go or I should only try to get a 1066Mhz one? Is the speed concern because I think the controller automatically downclocks them right?

Thanx in advance!!

we have around 50 optiplex 790's that are about 3 years old now at work. One of them i have upgraded from a 2x4gb kit to a 2x8gb kit, while i bought 1600mhz mushkin ram the computer will only run it at 1333mhz, there are no settings in the bios to be able to change the speed or timings.

I have ran both mushkin and g.skill ram in a dell and have not had any issues at all with them.

What model optiplex do you have?
