Hello…. I currently own the Dell Optiplex 5080 10th Gen but I have gotten a good deal on the HP EliteDesk 800 G5 and I am contemplating on whether to Sell my Dell 10th Gen i3 and buy the HP 9th Gen i5…. Looking at the upgrade path on both of these systems the Dell can go up to i9-10900K (10 cores 20 threads) while the HP can will support up to i9-9900K (8 core 16 threads). The HP also has more pcie expansion slots and 2 x M.2 SSD slots against 1 x M.2 SSD on the Dell. I mainly use the system for video editing and to stream media files from my NAS to my TV. Should I stick with the Dell or get the HP which is a generation older ?
Thanks .

The 9th gen i5 at 6 cores/6 threads is not meaningfully faster than the i3 10100 with 4 cores/8 threads. If you need more CPU power I would drop a 10400 or at a push a 10700 in your current system rather than get the 9th gen one. 10th gen parts are generally easier to get hold of as they are still available at retail, though the supply is gradually disappearing.

I would not put a 10900K or 9900K in either of these systems.

To be clear, my two cents would be to stay with your current system. I've tested 4 core/8 thread vs 6 core/6 thread, you will not be impressed. The extra M2 slot is nice but seems a lot to change your whole system for that.

There’s nothing lacking with my specific usage ..I’m currently running 4 x 8gb sticks = 32gb 2400mhz in the Dell. I was wondering if more cores with the i5 would improve performance during playback and editing in anyway??
Is there anything lacking with your specific usage, and the current Dell?

If not, leave it alone.

The i5 has more cores but it lacks Hyper Threading, so your going down from 8 threads to 6 threads. The i5 should be a little quicker still, but this is a side grade not an upgrade. The 10th gen i5's have Hyper Threading so they have 6 cores/12 threads not 6 cores/6 threads. The latter would give you a much more meaningful increase.

Thanks for your answers and advice.. I will stick with Dell and upgrade the CPU instead..

Before updating the CPU in that machine, make sure that it will work inside. Is the exact same model that you have available with the updated CPU? IE. is there a listing on the spec sheet that shows other options?
Additionally, you will want to be sure that the power supply in your unit is the same one offered in the unit with the higher line CPU. Motherboard may also be an issue, but this is much less common.

Lastly, you will probably have to hunt down a proper cooler if you go above an i5. Dell often uses a proprietary fan spacing and sometimes even still use those strange shrouds.
