The on-board video works on this Optiplex 740, but I have tried several PCI-E cards and PCI cards and I get no video. In fact I can leave the card in the PCI-E slot and the on-board video still works. I think I can assume that the PCI section of this motherboard is dead. I have fixed a similar problem by replacing capacitors on the board, but this time I can see no swelled caps, so I do not know which ones might be bad. Don't have time to replace random caps and hope it fixes it. This computer is for an arcade type video game and it needs a high performance video card to work properly. Time to find another Optiplex 740 motherboard I guess.

The Dell Optiplex bios has a "PCI information" section and it lists Slot 1, 2 and 3. I tried each one and then put a card in all three and the bios says they are "not populated" no matter what I put in any PCI slot. This bios has an "auto" and an "onboard/card" setting and that is it. I tried different setting and nothing changes. Little doubt the PCI section is bad. This computer works great with the on-board video.

i have the same problem, have you found any solution? tnx

Hate to ask so late in the game but does your new video card require a separate power cable from the power supply? Is there a 4/6/8-pin molex connector on the card anywhere? If so, you need to connect a cable from your power supply to this card in order for it to have enough power to turn ON. The slot(bus) may not have enough power to turn the card on.

mine doesnt need power cable from the psu coz before, it was working fine, then suddenly the pci-e slot cannot detect my v-card, even the old ati radeon hd v-card that also works before
