I have dell optiplev 745(core2duo 2.13;2gb Ram;80gb WD800JD)...I've installed speedfan, but it doesn't recognise any of my fans(on cpu and HDD) and I want to change speed of HDD fan...How can I do that???

Solution

you will not be able to change anything. your pc is too old. you need a newer pc to be able to change fan speed. 40 degrees is perfectly fine for a hard drive.

thnx man....

I was able to so this with speedfan with no problem! I just went into options and stumbled upon a checkbox that allows for compatibility with not only dell notebooks as the checkbox claims...it works across almost every dell computer, desktop OR laptop! Even though my speedfan is too messed up to use the CPU fan any more, and i am too lazy to re-install speedfan, it worked up until i had to re-install my O.S. without any problems.

Confirmed! I was able to control the fan of an Optiplex 745 running Windows 7 with SpeedFan 4.49 using the "Enable Dell support" checkbox on the Option tab of the Configure dialog.

It sees the fan as:

Labe:l Fan1
Chip: DELL
Sensor: Fan1
Sample: 2145 RPM
BUS: ISA
Address: $3E8

It has no problem controlling it, but it seems more like a normal/full speed switch. I have to keep reading the doc...

Thanks for the hint!

Your welcome! Speedfan has also been a great help to me ever since i first got my old desktop...it helped me figure out what temps my old video card would be rising to when i was breaking it in for high temps (since it had only a tornado heatsink to cool itself, it never had a fan), it helped me out with diagnosing the overheating damage on a card i just recently recieved my replacement for, and it also helped me find out just how effective the homemade air duct i built for my old video card was. It claims to make estimates only on the temperature, not the actual temperature readings, but in fact, it is very, very accurate!

Thanks for the speedfan tip. I didn't catch the dell check box. I've been trying everything because my cpu fan started spiking up and down about every 10 seconds. Just curious , now that I can control the case and cpu fan what should they be running around. I have a dell studio xps 8100 with a i-5

These Dell systems have a very odd fanspeed control system. The fan itself is capable of variable throttle as I rewired a Dell Optiplex 745 case/CPU fan to nearly outdo single loop watercooling units in unison with a Hyper 212 EVO, but the fan controller in the Dells is 3 speeds: Jack squat, Half speed, and RUN FOREST RUN!!! (the last one is only used if the CPU exceeds 50 to 60 degrees celcius...a healthy, happy 745 almost always sits on top of the half speed notch 24/7.) My suggestion is not to touch the fan speed controls until you replace the thermal paste, but keep the program anyways whether or not the thermal paste replacement/fan adjustments work to see what temperatures your CPU actually IS reaching.

If you HAVE already replaced the thermal paste within 2 years time, then just lemme know and I can show you how to make a fan speed profile.
