I have just got a dell optiplex for my kids to fool around on but the video card I was given with it, a geforce gt 240 doesn't look like it will fit....or I'm doing it wrong. Can anyone help or do I just need to get a new card?

Solution

your Optiplex has a BTX motherboad and you cant use dual slot VGA in it.

your best option is to buy another card and be single slot.

also there are 3 kinds of Optiplex 755 , one takes full hight cards , and one takes only half half hight cards ..

here is a pic...

can you please tell me which one is it?

this card will work fine with ALL OF THEM for $99.99 , and is alot better than your GT240.

just get the card and have fun :)

and this card fits both in full hight and low profile slots. so dont worry .

and dont get any other lower card.. this is you best solution . has GDDR5 and not DDR3 , plus it works fine with your powersupply.

SAPPHIRE 100357LP Radeon HD 7750 1GB 128-bit GDDR5

Now, MT can take full hight, short, single bracket cards, to my knowledge the strongest which can fit is HD7770. Power supply can be upgraded to standard ATX, use of modular PSU is recommended.

DT, SFF can take low profile cards like the one, which was listed, Sapphire 7750 low profile, which is one of the best in this class, and as stated above, this card can be installed into MT as well. Power supply can not be upgraded due to size limitations, it is simply proprietary.

USFF, is sad story - it is not upgradable at all, only hard drive can be changed, this is dead end.

Processor can be upgraded to Q6600 (except USFF), but this is another story and involve more talking.

Anything else I can help you with?

He cant add HD 7770 whatsoever , it is a 2 slots card , and this model of dell is BTX , with the VGA card in the opposite direction. there is no place for 2 slots card sadly even in the full hight one ....

Knowledge is the power.

So far I found only 2 7770 video cards which will fit inside - PowerColor AX7770 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131477
