HI,

I have the following

Manufacturer: Dell Optiplex 780
Model: 0C27VV A01
Chipset: Intel Q45/Q43 Rev 3
Southbridge: Intel 82801JB Rev 2
CPU: Core 2 Duo E7600
DDR3 memory

BIOS Version: A15
Date 08/06/2013

I had a E7500 Core2Duo on a DDR2 board which I was able to overclock massively up to an impressive 4.0Ghz and running as cool as ice. I sold this and I then opted for the above spec machine which I thought was slightly better and would give me even greater upgrade options. However, to my surprise, I wasn't able to do a thing to make her faster. The BIOS options are just not the same as the previous board. Pity.

Question is whether I am missing something and in fact this CPU is overclockable.

According to motherboard model you have Mini Tower with 305 watt PSU.

OK this is the list of maximum CPU upgrades for you PC:

Intel® Core™ 2 Quad Q9650/3.00GHz, 12M, 1333FSB
Intel® Core™ 2 Quad Q9550/2.83GHz, 12M, 1333FSB
Intel® Core™ 2 Quad Q9400/2.66GHz, 6M, 1333FSB
Intel® Core™ 2 Quad Q8400/2.66GHz, 4M, 1333FSB
Intel® Core™ 2 Quad Q8300/2.50GHz, 4M, 1333FSB

If interested to go this route, let us know, as more upgrades might be required.

There are also limitations on video card upgrade, strongest so far, which can physically fit is MSI GeForce GTX 750 Ti N750ti-2GD5TLP no power supply upgrade is needed.

RAM can go easy to 8 GB Low Density only, Crucial preferred, others are hit and miss.

Anything else I missed?

Didn't the OP ask if the CPU were overclockable?

Question is whether I am missing something and in fact this CPU is overclockable

They stated that they had a locked BIOS.

BIOS Version: A15
Date 08/06/2013

Did I misunderstand the question?

It sounds like this. Sorry if my post was sound a bit offensive.
Lets go over OP statement.

However, to my surprise, I wasn't able to do a thing to make her faster. The BIOS options are just not the same as the previous board. Pity.

OP noted that BIOS has no overclock options.

Question is whether I am missing something

Missing ability to overclock.

in fact this CPU is overclockable

Only on non Dell motherboard, which is correct.

I hope I explained my point of view.

The answer is actually very clear - no one can overclock Dell, if Dell is not allows. Forget about general overclocking rules when dealing with Dell BIOS!

Thanks for the clarification. I figured that they knew the BIOS was locked and were looking to see if the CPU could be overclocked in other circumstances.
