Dell optiplex 790 GPU upgrade

I know there are threads for this, but those are old and i am hoping for a new solution with fresh hardware, with better gpus out there.
My pc is the i7 2600 | 16GB DDR3 RAM | 0HY9JP motherboard | radeon hd 6450 (yeah, well almost anything is an upgrade compared to this...)| MiniTower case version of the 790 series. Main goal is to be able to play recent games ~ in medium settings (or better if possible )
If anyone could inform me what are the most common "catches" i should be aware of. For example, if i need to upgrade the PSU also, what does it have to do with the motherboard or if i manage to chose a lowprofile GPU, are there any maximum wattage restrictions or recommendations?

Hm, you have ATX motherboard, very good, so with your CPU your budget could be the problem.

Just one question, have you open BIOS before, if yes, how you navigate in BIOS, with keyboard or mouse - I am trying to figure out, which BIOS you have, Legacy or UEFI, as it can pose problems for GPU upgrade.

Without BIOS limitations, you can go up to GTX 970 if you wish, as long as it can fit inside....

So, first I need from you is BIOS check, next your budget, which must include power supply upgrade if someting stronger than GTX 750TI is desired.

The budget then smeems to have decided that it is the GTX 750 TI, but do i need to upgrade the PSU for that ?

Just make sure when checking those cards - that they do not require 6 pin power connector (some factory overclocked do have 6 pin). Standard GTX750TI need only 60 watt.

I would be glad if it was really this simple, but how come this GPU will work without a PSU upgrade?

Just get a 450-500w Antec, XFX, Seasonic PSU and the GPU.

Both of the GPUs you are looking at are a generation old. Look at the r7 260x and the gtx750ti. Both are much better.

Actually the problem is that the stock PSU is only of 265 watts and the stock motherboard can't draw more than 35 watts max from PSU in PCI x16 slot. That's my real problem. As good cards need power (more than 35 watts) and also more than 265 watts PSU is needed. Although I just have one 320 GB SATA 2 Hard drive and I just wanna buy a good graphic card...

I think it fits and has a lot bigger fan.

The SFX POWER2 400W psu will fit in this case with a little modification i now have a 4gb card GTX 750TI OC running in my 790 ssf with no trouble as this power supply comes with pci connectors for just over £50 you can use the original power supply base plate to mount this.

Great Ollie! This is exactly what I needed to hear.

Just curious... what "little modification" is necessary to get the PSU to fit?
And what kind of benchmarking are you getting out of the 750TI in this setup? What games are you running, and on what settings?
