Hello I have dell optiplex 990 sff computer. I haven't change anything. I was wondering what kind of GPU I can put in it.

Solution
I wouldn't think so. The GT 740 is a low profile card that requires a total system power supply of 400 watts. ( With a TDP 75 watts at 20 amps per rail)

Your power supply, as I stated, is 240 watts with 64% efficiency with two 4.2 amps on a single 12v rail.

I wouldn't risk it. You have to take into account the power that the CPU is demanding, the hard drives, and the optical drive.

And most dell power supplies are proprietary, and can not be replaced or upgraded without extensive modification to the case and the board.

If you're willing to risk it, then that is your own decision. But you would most likely experience a great deal of problems such as the system suddenly shutting down due to power drain.
Most proprietary desktops aren't made to be upgraded. And it makes it equally harder if they're "Small Form Factor."

They normally have the T Variant of their CPU which requires less power, therefore they're often matched with low power "efficient" power supplies.

The Optiplex 990 has a single PCIe 16x slot, and 240 watt Power Supply with a typical efficiency of 64% at 4.0 amps. Not really enough to power any sufficient discrete graphics card.

Even the lowest end cards require at least a 300 watt power supply.

One suggestion are AMD cards like the Radeon HD 6450, which only requires about 18 watts through the PCIe lane. The good news is that they're only about $25. lol

You MIGHT be able to get away with a GT 440... And it's about three times the performance of the HD 6450, and can play a few nice titles at modest resolutions and settings. But it will really tax your power supply and is not recommended that you go any higher than that GPU.

Also good news, they retail for about $30. lol

So if I would want to get a better video card than I need to upgrade the power supply?

found it, looks like xfx Radeon R7 250 isn't a good card.
Maybe you can suggest a card in similar price range, that would work with original PSU.
Thanks
