Looking to upgrade Dell Optiplex 3010 core i3 3220 with xeon e3 1230v2 cpu. Its almost an i7 3770 equivalent. Anyone know if this is a drop in upgrade? Can/ should you update bios on a dell? These cpu’s are Ivy Bridge series cpu’s fyi...

There seems to be some support for Xeons on the Optiplex 3010. At least Sandy Bridge not sure about Ivy Bridge. Bios-mods.com users would be better able to let you know if the BIOS contains the correct microcode for that model of Xeon. The motherboard itself should support it. It's just a matter of whether Dell bothered to include support in the BIOS.

Here is a post regarding a Xeon E3-1240 in the Optiplex 3010.

As far as I know the OptiPlex 3010 supports i3 and i5 3rd Gen CPUs only. It does not even support i7 and definitely no Xeon.
With a Dell BIOS, the Core i5-3450 might be the highest supported CPU on that system.
There are two motherboards versions on the 3010 and if you are lucky it might work in one of them.

Thank you for your help. I looked around and there was very little info. I know most standard boards people were dropping in xeons as they were cheaper than 3770’s and even 3570Ks

You could take a chance getting a used Xeon from eBay.
I got a couple for $74 and $81.
If it doesn't work you might be able to re-sell it.

No worries, unfortunately, i never tried it as it was a work client pc and couldn't afford downtime if it didnt work or if any potential damage was caused other than it simply not working and reinstalling the old cpu. Why do people get so rattled when an old thread gets replied to?
