Dell Precision 690 running with Windows 7 64-bit FAN TOO LOUD! Any help?
Hi, I'm new to the forums and not sure if I'm posting in the right category. So the other when I turned on my computer, I noticed the fan noise coming from the computer was really unusual. So I opened to the case and took out the fan and cleaned it. I'm not sure if I had installed the fan the wrong way or something happened but the noise coming was really annoying. Also someone has recommend me using speed fan to monitor the fan speeds. The highest peek my fan speeds has gone up to was above 3000RPM. I'm not sure if speedfan changed the speed or something happened. Please help!

CPU: Intel Xeon 3.20GHz 3.19GHz (2 processors)
RAM: 8.00 GB
System type: 64 bit

This may well be an easy one.

The Dell Precision 690 can be fitted with an optional "chassis intrusion switch". When you take off the cover, there is a black push button on the upper right rim of the cover opening. If you take off the cover when the computer is off and then turn it on, the button is released- pops out slightly, there may be a message displayed similar to "thermal system compromised" and the fans will increase in speed considerably- and "roar". The fans will continue to run at the high speed even if the cover is replaced. However, if you have the cover on, fully start the system, then remove the cover, the fan speed should not increase. And, of course, is the cover if in place before a start, the fan speed should be such that the system is as quiet as usual. Any behavior other than this, may mean that the chassis intrusion switch has failed.

If your 690 has the chassis intrusion switch and still doesn't behave there is a way to test the switch. I'm not sure, and don't recommend it unless you're very confident and knowledgable electrically, but if having the cover on when starting doesn't cure the problem, you possibly could test the switch by cutting the wires to the switch and taping them together -watch not to short them on the case- thereby closing the circuit in the way the switch would if operating. Again, I don't recommend doing this unless you're confident as there are a lot of components in the neighborhood that wouldn't like sparks or surges of any kind. I see these switches for sale used on Ebahh occasionally.

Your original thought to clean the fans was a good one. The 690 uses DDR2 RAM which can run frighteningly hot- over 85C and if you have dual Xeons- even the dual cores, these make a lot of heat as well. While these temperatures seem much too high, a lot of looking around on the WWW shows they are within the design parameters and normal for these systems- there were posts of DDR2 running at 85-90 C consistently and yet didn't have any signs of thermal throttling.

I have tried the button solution but the noise is still there. Any help?

It's a long shot, but the switch may not be depressed sufficiently to make contact. Turn off the computer, and make a thin pad of paper and tape such that it will put a slight extra pressure on the button when the cover is closed.

If that doesn't change the situation, you might consider replacing the switch.

I'm still reluctant to suggest testing or permanently closing the intrusion switch circuit without knowing the circuit, the current involved, complications with software controls and so on, but that may be an immediate, temporary option.

The noise seems to decrease when the button is held. But when I release the button the fan goes full speed. I will try the paper solution. If that doesn't work then please help me!

I have used the paper solution and have taped it to the button. The noise does seem to decrease but after about 2 minutes the fan noise starts again. Any help?

If the switch action cures the problem, but only temporarily, it is probably near the point of not working at all. I would suggest trying a replacement switch off of Ebahh.

One thing to remember is that the 690 enclosure is made to reduce noise, i.e., under normal operation, with that heavy cover off, it's louder than one might think. If you have a monitor that reads the fan speed in percentage, I believe the normal fan speeds should read 35%. and, of course, you can also watch the core and RAM temperatures and if they're normal, then he switch may be working. When fan speed drops as the button is pushed, then rises again after a few minutes, it may be that with the cover off, the less focused air flow- letting the air stream out the side- is cauisng the temperatures to rise and the fans speed up a bit.

It does seem that the situation is due to the intrusion switch, so just to eliminate more fussing and experiment, consider the $7 Ebray solution.

Hello its not the switch a Simple test with a multi meter can rule that out, also its not the front IO panel where there is a thremal wire to the MOBO . You can buy the switch and IO and i guarantee its a MOBO Replacement mine was. I got a factory recon board from Charles Computers on ebay in the uk for £30 delivered

i changed the switch, front IO and thermal cable that Dell sent me and still fans ran at full so i brought a new MOBO and no more issues.

1 check there is a thermal cable from front io too MOBO
2 check Intruder switch
3 check BIOS for intruder alert and or reset
4 buy a new factory sealed MOBO
5 Suffer the Air Turbine .)

oh yes and check the RAM Fan is connected because if you remove this why the 690 is on it runs fans at max until restart and its connected

I had the same problem as you but resolved this.

I have 2 Dell Precision 690 (one for work and the other for gaming), the one I used for business was quite but the other was loud as hell.

What I did was swap the internal assembly fans with the other machine and the problem reversed it self.

I then purchased off ebay an identical setup to the business computer:

Front assembly fans
Hosing
Caddy with fan, which sit over the memory (not the one which bolts to the back of the system)

Cost: £20 - £30 2nd user

Started the computer up and the noise had gone.

Conclusion:

If one of fans is not working properly it will make the other 2 fans over work causing the loud noise.

I am running Dell Windows 7 64 Bit with no problem
