Dell Precision T7400 Second CPU Issues

I recently bought a second CPU for my t7400 (same as first = Intel Xeon E5440) and for some reason it doesn't like the second CPU. Won't load windows CD or linux unless I only have one of them in. Does anyone have any idea's what's causing this?

Check the stepping of the CPU. That will be the Sxxxx code etched in the top. They need to match.

SLANS, or SLBBJ are the options. Sometimes there are others not listed here. The Qxxx chips are engineering samples and belong to Intel. So they shouldn't apply here.

Thanks for the reply William, they are different, darn. Will have to try and find one that exactly matches the S code.

Shop by the Googling the S Code. The newer stepping can be significantly better sometimes so unless there's a known issue I would go for the newer of the two.

I bought another SLANS from the same guy on eBay that I got from before. Both S codes have similar features and such so I'll go with what I can get for cheapest value. I plan to use the system for some video editing and servers with friends. Thanks again for the help, didn't expect to get a reply the day after.
