also have a dell studio 540, but dell says i cannot upgrade to any of the cards the forums are talking about quad core processor, 6 gb ram, the preinstalled graphics G45/G43 chipset.
dell says I cannot do any upgrade like the forums speak of, they say the computer is too weak to upgrade. I am a novice at upgrading, so any help would be greatly appreciated thx david

Solution
I prefer the Asus brand myself. Have been using the boards for 17 years now with only one failure in that time.
They perform the same as long as the core clocks are the same. If one is overclocked it will perform a little faster. But it is not worth a big price premium. Most can be overclocked to the same levels as the pre overclocked cards you buy.
Yes ,definitely get a GDDR5 board GDDR3 is much slower.

Either will work when posting. The forum is set up so that you can post an answer, or respond to a specific answer by clicking the reply to button. Kind of helps keep things clearer some times.

when i talked to dell 6 mos ago they said the amd radeon hd 6670 1gb pci express card or the visiontek radeon hd7750 dual hdmi 1gb/16pci would work, last night they said there is no upgrade for my system, thinking they are just trying to sell me a new computer. was reading the forum here and they seem to indicate they would be okay

The limiting factor will be the power supply.
Open the case and list the power supple specs.
From what I could find it has a 350watt power supply. Although some may have a 250watt. If yours is the 350watt you have options.
This would limit you to a AMD 7750 class card without changing the power supply.

i was also told that it was a 540 s small case, but the box is 14high and 16 deep, they tell me that is impossible but that is what i have.
i don't think it is a small case if that is important

Yes that is what we needed.
In that case your best option without changing the power supply is the 7750 or 7770 video cards.
The measurements you gave are micro to mid tower size. Not SFF size. So a regular size video card will fit.Bestech are not the best units so we do not want to push it near its limit.

Dual monitor gaming Would require a more powerfule card to get good frame rates and graphics detail.
Unless you use the 2nd monitor for chat, monitoring, maps etc...
