Hello, I have a Dell T3500 desktop running windows 7 that I am having an odd issue with.

When I play a DVD, or Blu-ray, on powerDVD 14 and watch 4Od the screen flashes black every second or so and cuts off the sound.
This does not happen when using VLC to playback the same DVD/Blu-ray.

The PC is connected to my TV via a pioneer VSX-329 HDMI receiver, which is suspect may be the issue due to audio codecs changing and causing the display to cycle.

The specs of the PC are,
CPU : Xeon W3503 2.4GHz
Ram : 6GB
Boot drive is a 512GB SSD
GPU: Gigabyte GTX750Ti
Sound card: ASUS Xonar DGX using optical out
Disk drive: LG Blu-ray drive

Many Thanks

Easy way of testing this, bypass the receiver and see if it runs OK then.
Amgeorge,

Given the symptoms, my first thought actually is the fault might be in HDMI cable. Perhaps the first thing is to try another cable just to eliminate that possibility. They are surprisingly quirky. Or, did it work previously and suddenly fail?

There are a number of other possibilities, but to begin, consider running the GPU output directly to the TV via a DVI to HDMI connector or if you have component or even VGA. Then the run the sound from the sound card or integrated sound separately to audio inputs of the receiver. If it works- though the quality will not be fantastic- then the problem is in the receiver.

I'm assuming your GPU has an HDMI output. What is the GPU?

I run my television machine using a Dell E520. The video goes from the GT 440 via a cable that is DVI on one end and HDMI on the other. The sound goes from the M-Audio 192 sound card to a Logitech z313 2.1 sound system. I like the Logitech sound systems- I have 2X z313 - only $30! and a z2300 for my main system- as these models have have wired remote controls for the sound. Not as elegant as a more receiver, but good enough for me. I haven't had TV cable for 15 years. so I'm in the world of Netflix, YouTube, DVD and BluRay- a strictly ad-free life. The other HDMI input has a connection to a Samsung Blu-Ray player and the the third is a ROKU box. It does occasionally have a slight problem with HDMI lock when starting up and it's necessary to cycle thought the HDMI connections on the TV remote.

I have a Precision T3500 also (Xeon X5677 (3.47 / 3.73GHz/ 24GB DDR3-1333 / PERC 6/i + Seagate Cheetah 15K 146GB + Cheetah SAS 300 GB and it's an excellent system. It runs a pair of Dell 19" LCD monitors. At the local particle accelerator where I did a small project I asked what software systems were used to design the supercooled accelerator modules which are 18m long with some components to .001mm. The answer was: Siemens NX on Precision T3500 using Quadro K6000's ! which cost $4,200. I had an instant new respect for my $53 T3500.

Cheers,
