I bought a Dell U2311 approximately 18 months ago after being very pleased with a U2209WA I purchased prior. It presented without any visible errors or artifacts.

It's been in my office since I've received it, a dry and clean environment. I've used a dry cloth (mostly an anti-static one for cleaning glass) to clean off the dust and haven't had any liquids close to it.

A few months after buying it, I noticed a tiny vertical discolouration at the bottom, at 2/5 width-wise. It was easier to see when displaying blue/green/white, think from hue 65 to 170 in MS Paints palette.

As time went by, I thought I saw it become taller, but it seemed unlikely and not like any error I had heard of. Now, a year later, the discolouration or pixel defect is half-way up the height of the monitor (~13 cm).

I've tried to get a read on it with various magnifying glasses, but I can't really see anything wrong. The error "disappears" when magnification exceeds a certain point.

Anyone know what this error is? It's starting to make me nuts. I'd like to have more knowledge of what this thing is before talking to the retailer/Dell.

Here are some photos of it. I have limited experience with photographing LCD monitors, I also lack a macro lens for the camera, so you may have to play with zoom to see it properly.
With MS Paints centimeter scale.
Clean shot.
Dodgy one with tape measure and on-screen contrast.

It could be due to:

1. A connection issue. Disconnect and reconnect video cable at both ends. If the issue still exists, then try to borrow a cable from someone.
2. Possible be a graphics driver issue so uninstall your graphics drivers, then re-install latest version.
3. It could be possible that there is something wrong with the monitor, so you would need to contact Dell about warranty service.

D'oh, I forgot to mention that.

Different DVI-cable - no change
Different output from card - no change
VGA-cable - no change
Different computer/gfx card - no change
