[SOLVED] Dell U3011 2560x1600 to MacBook Air 2020 via USB-C to Digital AV

I'm trying to connect an older Dell U3011 monitor to a MacBook Air 2020 by way of the Apple USB-C to Digital AV adapter.
https://www.apple.com/…/A/usb-c-digital-av-multiport-adapter

The Dell monitor has HDMI 1.2 that will not go beyond 1920x1200, but I was using it at 2560x1600 by way of the antiquated but workable DVI-D Dual Link cable (which alas I no longer seem to have) on a Dell laptop.

The Apple adapter has an HDMI port on it that should be 4K capable (3840x2160), either at 30Hz or 60Hz, depending on the Apple laptop it is used with.

The built-in display for the MacBook Air 2020 runs at 2560x1600.

I bought a new DVI-D dual link to HDMI cable. The computer only offers 1920x1080 resolution (and some that are lower). Also, the screen is scrambled and has the wrong colors.

Any idea on how to use this old monitor with the new computer, and get the full 2560x1600 that the monitor should be able to present? Yes, we could buy a new monitor, but the old one is very good and I was looking for a new life for it.
