Hello all!

I am thinking of upgrading my desktop PC by replacing the "17-inch" CRT for a (real 17-inch) flat-panel LCD monitor. I want to reclaim precious desk space and do without all the extra the heat. Although the CRT does okay with pictures and movies, the text is not as sharp as I have seen on LCD displays. This can really strain my eyes because I primarily do text and spreadsheet work. I only occasionally watch movies and view digital pictures; I do not game.

I have a Dell Dimension 8200 with a Pentium 1.8 GHz chip, 512 MB RAM and an analog 64 MB GEForce 3TI video card.

I am thinking of purchasing the Dell UltraSharp 1707FP. Can anyone tell me if this is a good monitor for me and my system? And if not, what other make and model should I consider?

Thanks!

For a high quality 17 inch business monitor I would recommend the NEC 1740CX. This will cost you a bit more than a lot of other 17 inch LCD's but it is well worth it.

Otherwise check out the NEC 1770GX if you like the glossy look of the CRT. This has some very bright and vibrant colors and very nice look to it.

And I hate to say but for general business applications the Dell 1707 should work ok.

Hello!

I did some research on the NEC monitor. I found a total of 1 review on Google; fortunately, it was thorough, insightful and written from a useful persective. Because both you and the review recommended the monitor, I decided to buy it.

I purchased the monitor from a local Staples store who price-matched newegg.com, delivered it for free and provides for a 14-day no-questions-asked no-fee return policy.

I have used the monitor for several hours now and it is GREAT! The screen is brighter and the text sharper than on my old CRT. Imagine dealing with a subpar image for 5 years on a monitor that was only good for heating up my already warm and sunny office. Hell, Post-It Notes didn't even stick to its bezel!

Thanks again travbomb! If it were possible, I think I love you!

P.S. I noticed on my CPU a white port next to the blue VGA analog port. The port has 24 "holes" laid out in a 3x8 rectangular configuration, and each of the "holes" has a metallic projection. I also noticed a similar port on the new monitor. Is this a DVI digital port? If so, will using it provide for an even better image? (The monitor came packaged with only an analog cable.)

Thanks again! 😀

If a concern, a 19" has the same resolution as 17", so text is larger. So, maybe you want to return the 17" you bought for a 19"? If so, what you you buy? Lots of good choices... just check Newegg customer ratings and find one with at least 20 or more reviews scoring 5/5.

Yes, you're describing the DVI connector. It *may* provide a slightly better image for text viewing. You'd need to buy a DVI cable at a computer store. Many users find no difference between VGA and DVI.
