I've just about decided on the dell ultrasharp u2412m over a high refresh monitor. I've decided I want to see the colours IPS has to offer having owned a TN panel for the last eight years.

The dell seems to have good reviews as an overall good monitor. I still enjoy playing games, fps included so don't want to lose out on the whole input lag thing, I'm just wondering if the dell would be faster or slower than my current Samsung 226BW 2ms monitor and if it will offer an overall better gaming experience.

Cool. Do you mean a better experience in terms of input lag and response time as well? I really like the idea of the 1920 x 1200 and the extra vertical height over the more common 1920 x 1080.

The store I'm looking at also has a Dell Ultrasharp U2515H 25" which look's interesting price wise. What would I gain with going to the higher resolution on that monitor? I'ts 2560 x 1440. I don't think my GPU ATI R9270x would run my games as well but I do want to upgrade to a GTX 970 or similar at some stage just not sure when.

Probably an upgrade in everything, as your monitor is pretty old, but most noticeably in image quality. Anyway, both the U2414h and S2415h are delay free and have a low response time, so you do not have to worry about it.

EDIT: Just noticed you are referring to u2412m. No reason to but a monitor from 2012. If you would rather buy a 1200p monitor, buy the Asus VS24AH, it is the best choice. Bear in mind that the vertical height is nice for productivity but it offers little for multimedia and gaming.

Dell U2415h is a fine monitor, but it uses frame-less casing which has inner black bezels which ruin the perceived black depth. Example: https://www.flickr.com/photos/97364704@N08/15631381856/
It is still the cheapest good 1440p monitor you can buy though, so if you are into this short of thing, go ahead. I would probably buy a more expensive 27' monitor if I wanted to move on 1440p.

Speaking of which, 270X is not enough for gaming at 1440p. If you do buy such a monitor, change your gpu asap if you intend to do gaming (because otherwise there is no problem).

I'm from New Zealand. Don't seem to have any VS24's, have VS27's though. I'm also considering the Asus PA248Q which is newer and is apparently the direct contender to the dell u2412m but it's $100 dearer.

Is a newer panel than the dell u2412m really going to offer much more in terms of new technology?

Asus PA248Q is better than u2412m, but it is still an old monitor. Do you have a new zealand price comparison site or something like this to see your available options?

Here there are some choices by order of preference

The U2415H is fine, but it uses frame-less casing which have an inner black bezel which ruins the perceived black depth.

Given that Asus is pretty expensive, I would probably choose the HP.

Thanks XMorsX. Yes pricespy is the main comparison site here. I think I may still go with the Dell u2412m, the one I can get has a 2015 manufacture date and has a revision A02 panel which is probably the latest. It may be an older monitor but with the latest revision panel in it, it's probably on par with some of the newer panels, what do you think?

It is still older technology, it uses a grainer matte coating and has more quality control issues than the other newer models. Given that U2415 costs the same as U2412M and it is a newer and better model, why would you bother with the latter?

U2412M also flickers, avoid it.

Thanks MorsX. I went ahead with the U2412M. It's a nice monitor and I don't notice the grainy coating but It arrived with a stuck pixel so will be getting a replacement probably. I don't like the thin bezel on the U2415.

The U2412M also has IPS glow (I think) in the corners quite bad, If I get a replacement maybe it will be a better panel.
