Hello,

I can spend up to $800 on a monitor. Which of the choices listed below would best fit my needs? I play FPS games, racing games, and some other games. I also surf the web a lot, along with photoshop once in a while. I also have a 23" Dell monitor right now. Anyway, I can...

1. Buy the Asus PB278Q for $470. It has a 5ms response time, 27", 1440p, and a 60Hz refresh rate. It will be the primary display with the 23" Dell.

2. For $600 I could buy a Dell U2713HM. It has the same specs as #1 above, except it has a 8ms response time. It will be the primary display with my 23" Dell.

3. Even though it is out of stock in a lot of places, I could get the Asus PG278Q for $800. It is a 1440p TN panel with a 144Hz refresh rate and a 1ms response time. The Dell will run with it.

4. I could buy 3 Asus VG248QE's for $810 for the 3. They are 24" and 1080p, but have a 144Hz refresh rate and a 1ms response time. They cost $270 each. The Dell 23" will be used on a different computer.

5. I could buy 3 Dell P2414H's for $660 for the 3. They are 24", 1080p, 60Hz, with an 8ms response time. As with #4, the 23" Dell will be used for a different computer.

Which one of the Options (#1-5) will be the best for me?

It depends on what you want to prioritize. If you want to prioritize gaming, go with one of your Asus solutions. If you want to prioritize color accuracy, go with the Dell options.

That being said, I own two of the Dell P2414Hs, and they're bloody lovely for the price. I prioritized color accuracy and viewing angles, but I also do a fair amount of gaming, and honestly, I find 8ms to be a perfectly acceptable response time. But then again, I don't consider myself to be that discriminating when it comes to that kind of stuff. I play a game, I can see stuff, awesome. That's all I need.

If you do really want to prioritize gaming, though, I'd probably go with a 120Hz/144Hz monitor instead. Like your option #4. I don't know what kind of graphics card you have now, but you may want to just buy two of the VG248QEs and spend the rest of the budget on a new graphics card that can handle that kind of refresh rate.

The leap in resolution from 1080p to 1440p isn't really that astonishing. 1440p and such aren't necessarily for gamers, but more for content creators. With resolutions like 1440p and up, you can see a 1080p in your editing software of choice without zooming, and you still have room on screen for menus and sliders and things. Using that extra resolution for gaming... isn't that much of an increase in quality, really. Some games don't even support past 1080p. I'd say stick with 1080p for now until 4K becomes more mainstream. 4K is where you REALLY see a leap in quality.

Compared to 1080p60Hz, the leap to 144Hz is more noticeable than the leap to 1440p.

And again, if color accuracy is important, absolutely go for one of the Dell solutions. If color accuracy is even slightly important, there is no reason to go with the Asus monitors. That's not to say they're ugly; the opposite, in fact. The Asus monitors are very pretty. But, pretty and accurate are not the same thing.

I may go with the 3 Asus 1080p monitors. I really care about gaming. I will only use Photoshop to crop photos and upload to Facebook and Twitter. And web browsing doesn't really require an excellent monitor, and the 1ms/144Hz may make browsing look even better. The only downside is that the Asus are TN.

As for the GPU, one guy at Microcenter said to use the Gigabyte Gaming G1 because of the 3 displayports, while another Microcenter guy said to use the 290X because some were dipping below $300 while the 970 costs $350-70.
