Dell XPS 430 PSU and Geforce GTX 275???

Hello all. I am new to the forum. Great site!

I currently have a Dell XPS 430 which has a 375 Watt PSU and am running a Geforce 9800 GT. I'd like to upgrade to a Geforce GTX 275, but am unsure of the need for both supplementary power connectors? I have only been able to locate one 6-pin connector and was wondering if they make a converter to use for the 2nd one?

Also, I searched and searched for an upgradable PSU for the 430, but haven't yet found one. Although I did happen upon the following link that I found useful regarding the actual "real world" power consumption of the graphics cards. which leads me to believe that the manufactures specs are calling for "peak" power and not constant.

I've found a lot of information regarding "Dell's PSUs" and how they are much stronger that what they are actually rated.

I hope I'm explaining my question correctly. I need to know whether the PSU I have will run the GTX 275 or not. I could always go with the GTX 250 as I am sure it'd work, but I would really like the 275 if I can swing it with my current setup. If anyone knows of a PSU that would fit/work with the XPS 430, I'd love the feedback.

from looking at the specs on the NVIDIA website the minimum system power that will work is 550W.

Captain Charisma....not so much.

I have been to Nvidia's website and seen the specs. Hence the link I submitted in my post regarding the actual power consumption of the card and the difference between what the manufactures states the card requires from the PSU..........perhaps you haven't taken the time to read it?

A waste of my time would be buying the card, attempting to install it to no avail, repackaging the card and returning it to the store. Merely asking a few questions on a forum where people are "normally" quite helpful and friendly, is actually an excellent idea.

If anyone has any helpful information regarding my topic and questions, please respond. Again, thanks in advance.

Captain you are a moron,

The specs on the site from nvidia and ati for that matter, are highly overrated.
Its rather about the amps on the 12v rail then the total wattage a psu ''claims'' to have.

Also Dell have great psu's, But tbh it would b pushing that psu if you'd go with a 275.

Id say best bets are, gtx 260 (216 ofc) or a 4870. But definatly not higher.

yea overrated? what do they have to benefit from overrating them. get you to buy a new PSU which they don't make. they put the specs the way they are to help customers so they do not get the card to find that a- it doesn't work or B- it blew there PC. if you don't trust the specs on the item from the company that makes it what specs are you going to trust.

Pretty much any standard ATX power supply will work.

This one is Dell compatible, although that means next to nothing.

Regarding the PSU that was linked from Newegg; that may be the first I've seen that will actually fit the XPS 430 case/setup. Some people slam Dell all day long, but I have always been happy with the products I've owned from them.

This is common sense, if the card says it requires 550w to operate don't power it up with a 430w dell PSU..... even though you will have a couple of Dell's trolls telling you that their power supplies are not cheap and can power a whole city, in the end it's the GPU that will give you the definitive answer....

The 275 needs an adequate PSU (at least a 500w brand name) to perform, don't skimp on the PSU as you will need it for many years to come......

Take DellUser1's advice since the EA500 fits perfectly in your case.......
