Demanding on Hardware?

I have a 1.7 GHz and a 128 meg Radeon 9700 AGP video card. I also have 1024
MB of RAM. It seems as though I have to use the lowest settings to play the
demo. Should this be expected? It seems my computer is stronger than that.

Minimum specs do call for a 1.5 GHz, so I would not expect you to be able to
play much above the lowest settings.

From that description, the only bottleneck would be your CPU. I have a
256meg Radeon 9600, 1024 meg of RAM, and an AMD 2800+, and I can play
with everything maxed out. (Well, except anti-aliasing, but who CAN play
with that on?)

How does the performance compare to Deus Ex 2? Ie, if my machine
is ok with that (except for one area) then would Thief 3 work ok?

I'm a bit concerned about having to buy a new video card when the
current one isn't even 2 years old yet, much less having to buy
one that requires extra power inputs (the computer heats up the room
too much as it is). I've got amd2200 and geforce ti4200.

The performance of T3 has been very much enhanced since DX2. If you can
run that fine, you should get a great framerate out of T3.

I was using an Athlon XP 2100+ (1.73 GHz, pre-Barton core) with 768 MB
RAM and a GeForce3 Ti200. I ran the game at 800x600 with low detail,
medium shadow detail, bloom off, multisampling 1. It was pretty
choppy in big complicated rooms, but smooth enough in most places.

My impression was that performance seemed to be a bit better in the
actual game than in the demo. Might have been my imagination but it
sure felt that way.

I've had the GeForce3 Ti200 for a couple of years, and it's not a DX9
generation video card, so after finishing the game, I wound up
spending cash on a Radeon 9800 Pro 128. The difference is dramatic.
I'm replaying the game at 1024x768, all detail levels at max, and
multisampling (antialiasing) set at 2. Haven't had any choppiness
yet. It feels as if I upgraded the whole computer. I have not yet
hit the place where the game was choppiest with the GF3 but I have
completed two levels with no problem at all.

I was surprised that just the video card made such a difference, but
the readme file does suggest that it really is that important (GF3
rated at low detail level, 9800 rated at high). The game makes a lot
of use of features that are built in to the hardware of the DX9 cards.

I am running a P4 850mhz, with a Geforce ti4200 128meg with
no problems. Game resolution is 1024x768.

The video card makes a huge difference in speed, but zero difference in
effects. I went from a 128Mb 8500 (DX8.1) to a 128Mb 9800 Pro (DX9) and got
the same results you did (Barton 3200 1 Gig RAM though) but this game is not
exactly a showpiece of DX9 effects. In fact, I've yet to see any visual
differences in DX9. Perhaps some out there would care to point some out?

Hmm, I had to use a tweaker with DX2 to use OpenGL, after which
performance seemed a bit better. It could be all in my mind,
since everytime I start the tweaker program it claims DirectX
is in use. I do know that a recent game (KOTOR) complained that
I didn't have enough video memory, but I don't think the 4200
can be upgraded.

I'll download the thief 3 demo and see how well that works, since
it seems that I'd have to buy at least an FX5700 to get similar
performance.

Hmm, I tried the demo, and it looks great, but performance seems a bit
strange. It feels a bit like DXIW did in many ways. In particular,
the "mouse lag" is annoying me the most. Ie, there is a slight pause
after moving the mouse before anything happens. I don't think this is
a performance problem, because if I keep the mouse continually moving
the scene can keep up. Plus the game is just as jerky if I go down
from 1024x768 to 640x480. DXIW had a huge problem with this until it
was patched, but it never went away completely (thus I was forced to
use auto-aim).

There is no way to turn down mouse sensitivity that I can see, and it
is too sensitive at the moment. Maybe this is fixable in the config
file, or perhaps the full game has this setting?

I haven't figured out any difference from detail level settings, and
I've got multisampling at 2 (and have no idea if this is done in
hardware or not). But fiddling with these don't seem to have any
noticeable affects.

I'll also look up some tweaks to get rid of camera wobble in first
person, because this combined with the mouse lag produces distinct
nausea over time.

I do notice that the hard drive light regularly blinks about once a
second, even if I'm not moving. Since it's so regular I don't think
it is swapping, but I wonder if I should upgrade from 512M or not?
