Hi,

I have taken off my i7 4790k from the motherboard to send the MOBO back for RMA and have noticed some small dents on the sides of the CPU from where the clamp has fastened down.
During install it was fine and dandy and I didn't have any problems fastening the clamp down.
Is this something i should consider for RMA as amazon said they would replace it. The thing is i don't want to send something in for replacement if it actually perfectly fine.

here are some pictures for you to look at :

If you need anymore information i will provide whatever you need.

Thank you

Solution
He's asking if the small dents in the integrated heat spreader are issues great enough to RMA the CPU.

It shouldn't be a problem. If it works, then you know it's not a problem. The CPU chip itself shouldn't be damaged by high pressure on the clamps because the heat spreader is there partially to protect it from that high pressure.
Hi i'm sorry if I didn't explain myself properly. I would like to know if this kind of damage could cause problems in the future with stability/temperature? is it worth the RMA or am i safe to just carry on using it?

thanks for the reply

thanks you for the reply blazorthon. well it definitely works fine.

I am getting unusually high temps though and I thought it may be my cooler the dark rock pro 3, It was such a pain to install and very fiddly so i thought that it must not have been seated properly.

After taking it apart i have decided its way to much hassle for what its worth and have sent it back and bought a h110i gt CLC this was when I discovered the dents.

Could those dents explain 75c temps running intel burn test on a 4.2ghz O/C at 1.065v Vcore?
I just thought while the CPU is out and my PC is in bits I would get this question cleared up as best I can.

edit: I should also point out in my system before with a 2011 socket i7 4820k on an asrock extreme4 motherboard with a corsair h80i CLC i was getting 4.2ghz at 1.106v vcore and it wasnt getting passed 60c.

I see it sounds conflicting. The processor mounting itself and putting the clamp down was fine and dandy. i wanted to explain that that part of the install didn't seem to be any different from my previous builds (like having to apply lots of pressure to the clamp etc.) it was the mounting of the fan that was a pain to install. and i7 baby you are right there it was the damn cooler. my question as per my message above is about the potential risk of loss of performance in the future not what caused the dents.

I also ran into this issue when installing a i7 4790K. I felt I was applying too much pressure and once I lifted the latch back up, I saw similar marks. Were you able to successfully use the same CPU? I've seen mixed responses on the indentations from the fastening process. I'm waiting on an optical drive to install windows (I thought my old one would have worked). I will keep you posted on my results, but so far all I've done is booted the BIOs and all my RAM and the CPU appears to be showing up.

Hi there he CPU was fine in the end no trouble.. i was just worrying for no reason. no crashes or shutdowns so far. hop this helps.
