I want to design my own phone case I a unique shape. What should I use to make the molds and what type of plastic is durable yet flexible enough to use as a phone case? I don't want to order a custom case from a company such as skin it, I want to manufacture it myself so if anyone has good advice please tell me

Solution

How much of a unique shape can you make and still have it be usable? If you make it into some odd shape it won't be comfortable to hold, or put in a pocket, or be sturdy, or will be too heavy, etc... And if you make it so it's smooth and pretty normal looking, you have a hundred $5 cases from China on ebay to pick from instead of spending a lot more than that.

Get some stickers for the case and call it a day :)

I would prefer to use molds because I don't have a 3d Printer 🙁

What will you make the mold with?

I have no idea that's why I came here 😛

I'm a (ex) manufacturing engineer, using injection molding for something like this will cost in the region of $10,000 - 20,000 for the tooling. Which your supplier would then put onto their injection machine, hence why the minimum qty that you would want to be considering making over the lifetime of the tool is in the 100,000's

3-d Printing, even using a 3-d printing service is a much better option for low volume runs.

There is a point to a case for disabled hands, but 3d printing is the solution
