I cannot find a thread to save my life that addresses my specific concerns.
1. Before anyone jumps down my throat, I am trying to get my desktop tower to connect with my 73" TV. I know for whatever reason these VGA to HDMI adapters are tabboo. But I'm finding myself with no other choice.
2. I have seen all These magnificent conversion boxes, ones that plug into outlets and all that jazz. Well the one I just purchased (GE HDMI to VGA adapter) does not seem to be like anything else I can find online. https://www.google.com/search?q=ge+hdmi+to+vga+adapter&client=tablet-android-digiin&biw=768&bih=1024&tbm=isch&source=lnms&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwj0mIOt28bLAhXI6x4KHY9qBt8Q_AUI0QEoAQ#imgrc=CySgqgAXjZAnCM%3A
This is what it looks like. I cannot find the one I have, online.
3. I fiddled with my settings on my desktop and nothing has seemed to help (what an associate told me to do).
4. Now, my question. Are these adapters incapable of converting the signal? Or are these converters junk? Should I look into one of the fancy converters that plugs into almost everything imaginable? (I was kind of shooting for something small and compact.)
5. I know someone will ask if I'm just trying to watch Netflix, or encourage me to purchase a new TV. Thats not an option. And no I am not just looking to watch Netflix. I am looking to be able to surf the web, play world of Warcraft and watch movies.. Mostly just WoW though. No my TV also does not just have a VGA slot. Wouldn't that be nice though!

I'm looking for help, not to be patronized or told to buy a new TV (or other pointless things).
Thank you so much ahead of time. This is really bumming me out.
