Okay, I have a Netgear cable modem, CMD31T, with a single Ethernet port. I bought a Google WiFi, so I could get WiFi for my phone and tablet. I couldn't hook up the Google WiFi because there's only one port. I bought an Ethernet switch, Brash Networks 5 port gigabit ethernet switch, model BN105. I connected a Belkin CAT5e networking cable from the modem to the switch, the desktop Ethernet cable to the switch, Google WiFi cable to the switch. WiFi works great. I can't get my desktop Inspiron computer to connect to the internet. What's wrong? Thanks.

Theoretically how you have it set could work. However I'm guessing the Google WiFi is a router. Most routers have extra Ethernet ports on them and will handle handing out ip addresses etc to all your other devices. Since things work great on WiFi, easiest thing is to do this.

Unplug the switch, plug the Google WiFi into the modern, let Google WiFi router handle all your connections.

Get a USB WiFi adapter similar to this one.

Note, it does not need to be that particular one, there are tons of them, some as little as 5 dollars...

But basically, plug one into your computer like you would a flash drive, install the drivers, and it should give your PC the ability to connect to WiFi. Then connect to Google WiFi via wireless from your desktop.
