Desktop folders have gone! Help

Hello this is a recent problem I have been having, I turn my PC on and the Desktop folders and icons are missing but if i go into My Computer and click on desktop they are all there... This makes no sense to me so please help if possible.

Right click on desktop--> View--> Show desktop icons

Right click on Desktop, View and check Show desktop icons. See if working.

Wish it was that easy but its not working.

Then try a system restore to a date when the icons were on the desktop.

Now I cant open any programs apart from the default ones. and I'll try system restore a little later if there are no fixes

I got them back! Somehow when I dragged one of the old folders back onto my desktop it made the old ones visible again, Just hope they stay like this.
