Hello!

So today I got a Windows update which started pretty good until it got to 98% and then it was just like that for an hour. I thought that it had frozen so I powered off my pc and switched it on again. When I logged in to my account there was no desktop image, no apps and nothing didn't happen when I tried to press the windows logo or search icon. I got a error saying that: C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile\Desktop is not accessible. I tried restarting but nothing changed. Please, I really need this issue fixed ASAP.

Thanks,

InFuture

Solution

The easy temporary fix is to press Control + Alt + Delete, and click on Task Manager from the menu that comes up. Click File, Run New Task, and type "explorer.exe". This should bring...

Try Windows Key and R and then you will get a RUN tab

In run type explorer.exe

Hope it Helped 🙂

Thx,
Kuba

Since I can't run any computer spec program or well any program I can tell you the specs I remember. Graphics card: AMD Radeon HD 7700. And Intel 5 but I don't know what model. Windows 10 64-bit

If you have a USB stick and a spare laptop download the latest driver from AMD (link below) and drop the driver file on the USB plug it in your computer and Install see if it helps

https://support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop?os=Windows+10+-+64

Download all 3 files and have a USB 4gb at least

If you press Windows key and R and then paste in this command:
%systemroot%\system32\rstrui.exe

Can you get the system restore to open and restore to the point prior to the update install?

Lets try it a different way. Hold shift while clicking restart again, however this time click "Troubleshoot" -> "Advanced" -> "System Restore" Then it will reboot and maybe you can choose a restore time prior to the offending update.

Lets try one more thing. Enter safe mode with command prompt by following these instructions:
https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/how-to-start-windows-10-in-safe-mode-with-command-prompt/

Then when the command prompt is open type:
sfc /scannow

and see if system file checker can do anything about it.

If that doesn't work for you, you'll need to reinstall windows. If your PC isn't a self build, what is the make and model number?

But the thing is you will have to do that every time you start up windows

Solution

You have that already on your first response. And it didn't work.

Here's the more permanent fix, but be warned that it is more difficult! First, press Control + Alt + Delete, click on Task Manager from the menu, click File, Run New Task, and type "regedit.exe". Allow it to make changes to the computer by clicking Yes. Now, in the left-hand pane, click the little triangle next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, scroll down and click the one next to Software, click the one next to Microsoft, click the one next to Windows NT, and click on the Winlogon folder - not the triangle, the actual folder. Next, move over to the right-hand panel, scroll down, and find the key called "Shell". Make sure that, under the "Data" column, it says explorer.exe. See over here? Make sure that says explorer.exe. If it doesn't, then right click on the Shell key and click "Modify". Now change the value in this textbox to explorer.exe.
