Hello everyone.

My desktop has been working fine for a few months now. I recently moved it across country, and now it won’t stay on for longer than 5 minutes or so.

The CPU fan(?) is getting extremely hot. It is a tall metal thing screwed into the motherboard above my CPU. Could that be the reason?

I have removed and tried several sticks of ram so I don’t believe that’s the reason for this.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Solution
The CPU shouldn't get hot.. it seems that this is the problem!

  • Apply thermal paste on the CPU.
  • Change the CPU Fan if its not preforming well
  • Make sure that other Fans are working and providing the entire case with good airflow.
And that's pretty much it.
Check the temperature by the tool "coretemp" and watch the temperature till the PC shuts down. How hot is it then?

Which CPU are you using?

Check the correct seating of the cooler. If you have to remove it to have a look, replace the thermal paste between CPU and heat sink.
