AMD FX 4100 (4 years old) 4GB x 2 Corsair vengeance CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9 (4 y/o) Samsung Evo 250gb SSD (Less than 1 y/o) Gigabyte 970A - DS3P Aerocool Integrator 500W PSU AMD Sapphire 7770 Black edition (Not sure what I may have forgotten.)

My computer will randomly shut off at random times so it doesn't need to be under load or anything or so I think.

It will turn off for a moment, turn itself back o, maybe work for about 2 minutes then shut itself back on, repeat. I was using it all of last night with no hitches but I noticed when I woke up I left the plug on by accident and it must have been going through that cycled all through the night even though I turned it off properly. I've already replaced both the motherboard and PSU to no avail. Please help D:

Solution
Use the Event Viewer, System log to determine what is precipitating the shut down. If you're not certain of time, filter for event ID 6006 (event log service shutdown) to pinpoint the shutdown time, or event ID 1074 to see shutdown event itself.

Thank you for the reply!

Well I had recently (2 Months ago) re-applied the thermal paste on my CPU due to high temps which solved that issue. It was only until about a month ago that this began and everything that people have suggested (Bar SSD and graphics card) I have tried in a different config.

I now just reinstalled windows and the problem persists in exactly the same way as before, with the old motherboard and psu and old m/b and new psu. It's really confusing as to what could be wrong though it's just ruling out the others now.

well just dont rule out anything yet.
have u scanned ur computer for infections or malware?
unless ur absolutely sure its hardware related then maybe find a hardware test. try this test http://www.userbenchmark.com/resources/download/UserBenchMark.exe

as for ur thermal paste. did u apply it correctly? also u dont need much but u dont want too much either

im not a computer wiz that diagnoses problems but this is where i would start.
sometimes running benchmarks could pick up faults or at least tell u what part is not performing the way it should be. be even better if u had a benchmark when it was running good so u can compare. if u dont, obviously u cant

I will have to try it indeed, if it stays on for long enough! It's so strange, I really wish I knew what was going on. I do hope it's neither the CPU or GPU as they are a lot more expensive than the two I've already bought. I'll give that a go and reply to you when I can (Later now)

I haven't been able to run any of those due to it now not turning on past the bios. There does seem to be a slight pattern in that when it does happen it happens quite a lot and after a while it will not be able to boot due to it restarting so quickly

now that actually sounds like a hardware problem.
do u hear any clicks or buzzing noise?
wait so u bought a new mobo and psu...
well honestly i wouldnt know what to tell u im not a techie.
but if it were me. and i couldnt find the problem id get rid of the chip set entirely. and dont buy old upgrades. if u buy bnib parts think about getting the latest stuff. cuz in the end ur just wasting money on old news, even if ur spending more of the new gen stuff, at least its new gen and the value is better.
but again thats something u have to decide when u cant figure out what is the prob.

There is a click when it turns itself back on but that probably happens when it turns on normally anyways. Right now it's a money issue with me, I could only really afford to get those things which were the most likely and some of cheaper options. I was thinking of getting a new CPU, motherboard etc but it would require months of planning and I'd like my desktop now. I'll be going to uni next year so I do need to save quite a bit for any eventualities for when that comes.

It's nearing 4 year old that desktop and it's really frustrating not knowing what on earth is wrong. I've thrown enough money at it for now without going over budget but it really sucks. To me it seems like something inside has blown somewhere but there's no evidence of that anywhere, even if it was the most expensive option I'd like to at least know what the fuck is going on so I could plan in the next few months out to buy the part.

what click? can u feel or hear it?
try disconnecting ur hdds and boot it only with ur ssd

about ur situation. i know how it is to be frustrated but buying or fixing something hoping that is the cause is not the way to go. thats ur last resort but by then ur most likely replacing most of the hardware.

I've disconnected it from the start :/ It sounds like it's just the fans kicking in or something, I haven't quite diagnosed the issue. I'm gonna try the RAM in different configs to see if that fixes it. It does seem endless to go the buying-everything route but I haven't had any real inclin as to what it could be everyone suggest it's either the motherboard or PSU which I have both changed. :I

Just tried memtest thankfully it worked though no errors for either ram or cpu came up so now i'm really confused. It could either be the graphics card or the ssd at this point

progress man!
just keep at it. isolating the problem is what ppl get paid to do. in the end u walk away with something positive!

I had re-installed windows 10 so I'll have to wait to see what it says when it does it again and get back to you. Thank you for telling this as well!

You're right, it is quite a positive thing actually! didn't see it like that :) I'll get back to you if I get it sorted!

Heh yea I've always liked the challenge. It's pissing and very frustrating. But u gain so much from dealing with these types of problems. As computers will always be in our lives, figuring these types of problems will help u and even give u a better sense on diagnosing different problems

Well it's certainly taught me a few things! didn't know to look in the event logger so that's good! Also I noticed something in the event logger that said something about low power or sleep mode. I've changed the power button and reset button around and left out the reset button (It seems to be the faulty one) and so far it seems to be working...So all of this palava may have been due to a faulty power button :I Oh well!

wow i gotta say thats an epic surprise!
good call on that george! +1 answered
@ george : out of curiosity.. how did u end up using the event viewer first time around?

Thank you for telling me about the event viewer (I should have found out about it ages ago!) It's saved me potentially a lot more money at this point! Came down to a faulty power button which I swapped and now it seems good!

Just like everyone else...keep poking around learning things as I go along. I'm just older and have gotten around more LOL. I also did take a few free online classes on Microsoft Virtual Academy site. Some of them are cheesy, but you do pick up some tidbits there, too.
