Desktop Router Issues On New PC

Hello,

I purchased a home built PC yesterday and am having issues getting it to connect to the internet through my home router. My laptop connects just fine, even with an ethernet cable, but the desktop will not connect to the internet with the same ethernet cable.

I can get it to connect going straight through the modem, so somewhere the router and PC are not getting along.

I have been searching for a while now but can't find a solution, I updated my drivers and also made sure that my IPv6 and IPv4 settings were set to automatically obtain an IP address.

The desktop when connected just sits trying to connect, says it's an "unidentified network." I am using Windows 7 64 bit.

I was hoping someone here may be able to point me in the right direction. Thank you!

try these two things, which are problems and solutions that have worked in past but no guaranteed.

1) what encryption is router using....some newer pc/laptops/OS do not like working with WEP
2) try disabling IPv6 and try again.
3) Also, until you get a solid fix do you have a USB wireless adapter? I know this is not the solution you are looking for but this would be as a try and see. If you do, install using and see if works with windows or the manufactures wifi connection software

I actually do have a USB wireless adapter but I can't get the software to install, it starts to, then just crashes. It does not automatically recognize it.

I'm not sure what encryption it is using, I'm sort of new to any networking stuff, it's a Netgear N150 router (WNR1000). I've had it for a couple of years now.

depending on the home build you may have to run (on the USB adapter) the manufactures software first to install drivers first (do not know OS of home build) and then put in the USB.

On laptop if you hover your mouse over the connection it should just pop up show encryption setting

So I went through most of the steps listed.

I was going to delete the driver software for the card but decided to try something else. The PC has a ethernet card added, then the ethernet port on the board, I have been using the ethernet card versus the one on the MB. I decided to try the MB one again, updated the driver, then disabled the one that was added, seems to work now.

Am I just getting lucky for a few minutes or does that sound like a realistic fix?

Could they have been fighting against each other?

At one point my laptop popped up saying there was an issue with IP addresses.

It is possible.

Since was home built no idea why two ethernets unless one on mobo was slower than one added. At least now you can look at card when you want to see exact model and serial number to do a search for that now. Make sure it is all set to automatic (I know you did before for card) just to make sure it wasn't trying to use same IP that laptop was given. If becomes an issue and you do not have a lot of different devices connecting you can always switch your router to use static.

next time laptop pops up with issue with ip check ip address on both
from cmd
ipconfig and see what address they are trying to use.

I just hope all gets fixed for you because I know this can be frustrating
