Deviding a case in half for better cooling

hey all

want to find out what you all think, my dad gave me a new GFX card (XFX 9800GT 512mb) and it runs great just a little hotter then i am happy with. yesterday well playing a game the screen when blank and the game quit and i strait a way opened the temp monortoring software i use and there i was 105C so the card did what was right what sucked was that i only got to play for 5 mins

so today i divided my case in half putting cardboard across my case making two sections one GFX card other everything else and i put three 80mm fans in the bottom piece one the blow air in one out and one in the middle to incress air flow

now i want to know what you guys think cos this seems to be works it still idels the same 75C and it dont get hotter then 88C now even over clocked

just turn the graphics card fan up lol... that XFX 9800GT has the crappiest cooler i have ever seen. seriously. my 7600GS had a better cooler than that...

Yeah, turn the VGA fan up, use RivaTuner. You can set 100% fan speed easily.

It has a fan profile that you can set, but it is a little convoluted... on purpose. I built a system with an 8800 GTX and just used Riva at 100% (lazy), now he won't let me set a profile, he likes it. I'm gonna do it when he's not looking.

If you want to set a profile and can't figure it out, PM me.

i did my over clocking with rivatuner and even with the fan at 100% overclock or not it over heats with out the cardboard and 3 fans

and yes the heat sink sucks on this card, had 2 xfx 8800GT before this (pity i had to sell them when i moved), and ideas on a after market cooler that will work

The nvidia control panel also allows you to change the fan speed. I found the profile weren't to difficult to use. Fan speed at 100 percent is load. I would recommend you use profiles to run the fans at 100 percent only during games.

He's beyond the fan profile.

You need to get a cooler and kill cardboard. I don't have the latest in coolers. The last one I put on was on an X850pro that was modded to an xtpe. I would start a proper thread looking for a good HS instead of looking for approval of your cardboard setup. You might get better results.

ill have to stick with the cardboard till i get some cash for a proper HS

i have alway wondered if cooling in sections would work better then trying to get as much air in one place at a time, cos i saw an old server once that had dividers and that work nice just a little noisy

I would just add fans to the case and/or aftermarket VGA cooler, but directing the flow to the the VGA is certainly a good idea, given your circumstances. If you are at 100% and it's still hot, I would lower the OC a little. Determine if the OC is worth it. Waiting for a cooler is better than buying a new card.

it over heats oc'ed or not just a little sooner, and yes i have turned the oc'ing off for now (and the oc'ing is worth it can get +-12% to 15% extra pull out it, oc's very well)

and i like rivatuner too it maybe old but it gets the job done right and 1st time every time

Riva is not old, they are as current as can be and kick ass.

Save your dough and get a cooler. Ask when you have the cash, because the sales change and that changes the best for the money.

riva is bloated. evga precision has everything in a single windowed, clean interface. real time graphs, link/unlinkable core/shader clocks, manual or auto fan speed control, 10 profiles... what more could you need? riva is complicated and unnecessary.

Riva may be too complicated for you (and me), but that is not my fault. :lol:

I say, if you are serious, Riva gives you more control. Do you dispute that? I think not.

I haven't even scratched the surface with Riva. If you go deep enough there are no limitations.

I didn't know about the EGVA tools, I will start recommending them (maybe), but Riva will always be close to my heart.

And one last thing, where is your link to evga precision, so I can bookmark it? I will check it out on my buddy's 8800GTX, it had better be cool. :lol:

I like the divided case idea! Simple, easy, and effective. Sometimes the "geeks" on here over-engineer their solutions. Way to use your noodle!

If you are serious, precision gives you just as much control as riva, and at least you know what you can do instead of a bloated messy complicated confusing mess of windows and tabs.

Yeah I read about precision a week or two ago and almost immediatly switched to it.
I originally decided to use it as I have always seen different temps depending on what program I used.
I actually set up 3 progs. at once to try and determine what the actual temps were.
Precision seemed to be the average of all of the others.
I know that doesnt sound like a glowing recommendation but at least I feel safe,

The program couldnt be easier to use with several options. Its reporting can be used or not in any application with a small informative display while gaming which is important to me.

As for the fan At least on my 8800gtx I cant hear it. I know it speeds and slows because I have checked, but to say a 35cfm fan is to loud baffles me.
Between that fan and the slot fan directly under it 100% for life.

I use evga precision as well and its really easy to use. I prefer it over Rivatuner. Rivatuner does have alot more options and control though.
