Diagnosing dead GPU

Hi all. A coworker gave me her laptop to bring home and diagnose. Upon booting, the computer had no display at all. First I tried the battery trick- unplug power, remove battery, hold power button 30-60sec, plug power in and boot. That proved worthless. I tried connecting an external monitor and on boot, held Fn+ the button with the monitor on it. Still nothing. I've come to the conclusion that it is more than likely a dead GPU. I am just wondering if I went about diagnosing it correctly, if my conclusion is correct or if there is anything else I can do (without taking apart the machine) to diagnose this issue. Thanks for any advice in advance!

the fn button must be press with another one on the top to activate the external screen on some system check the user manual for this laptop before you open it .

They said they pressed Fn + the button with the monitor on it.

Sounds like a dead GPU. I assume all lights come on, sounds like the fan comes on, but no video, and shinning a flashlight on the screen doesn't show a faint image (sign the inverter is fried), then it's probably the GPU.

Can I guess that it's a HP DV series, DV7 or possibly DV9?

@ getochkn you are wright but i just want to make shure that he try to press the monitor switch a few times and that the fn key led is light is that system got one .

Yes Getochkn, it's a DV5. She picked up the laptop (not sure how long ago) for $100. I assume it will be more expensive to repair than she spent on it.

I know I charge around $80 to reflow a laptop, so, ya probably not work it. The screen sold on ebay and the dvd drive and keyboard and case are probably worth more parted out on ebay.
