newer HP computer; no phone jack in back for dial up modem. I was looking at U.S. Robotics external- my question is this -- Why would one prefer a usb connection over a serial port connection?

Because serial ports have been obsolete for about 10 years. As have dial up modems.

Because not many new PC's come with a serial port connection anymore. OR an actual modem port.

If you really really need a dial-up (or fax) modem, there a still USB powered and connected devices available in online retailers.

Avoid "soft modems"!
