Did I break my graphics card???

Before i say anything. my english isnt the best and i am completely new to computer stuff as i am absolute beginner.
Recently I got a new graphics card for my pc so that i could run programs such as autodesk inventor for school. I need to purchase a dvi to vga converter in order to make it work with my monitor and i still havnt purchased it yet. However after i installed my graphics card i realized that it didnt seem to fit with my motherboard as the left side would go in and the right side wouldn't go in as much as the left side did and the graphics card had a gap in the brackets (the place where i screw the graphics card into the bracket). I was really desperate and i wanted to make my graphics card fit into my motherboard so i did something really stupid and i dont know if i broke my card or not. I saw a plastic slab that connects to the right side of my graphics card and i cut a piece off of it to make it smaller hoping it would go into the mother board however this did not resolve anything and i am unsure if i damaged my graphics card or not. Did i break it? And if not then what should i do to install my graphics card into my motherboard. Thank you for taking your time reading.

That piece shouldn't have any circuitry in it. If that's the only piece you cut then it should be fine. You can cut it again if it needs to be cut to fit, I've seen videos of people cutting it completely off. But I don't see why it wouldn't fit in the first place. :/
