It is a SATA power plug isn't it. You can run on a USB, but it would be slow even with USB 3 I'm pretty sure. Heck you can run a computer on a floppy. My first 2 computers didn't even have hard drives. They had a 4" floppy for the system, and another for the programs. edit yep, slow.
