Recently my cpu was having heating problems. When the pc was idle the temp would average 28-36 degrees. When doing something that could go to 40 degrees. When playing a game it would go to 60-70 degrees. my processor is an i5-4670k 3.4GHz. I use HWMonitor to check my temperatures.

Earlyer today i changed my thermal paste by placing it on the cpu and spreading it around then placing the heat sink ontop but when i turned my computer on my temperatures had gotten worse. can someone help me i'm starting to get worried?

Your temps numbers here are fine. Why are you worried?

If you applied too much paste, that may be why temps increased. Thermal paste is surprising not very thermally conductive (about a hundred times less so than copper, on average). It is meant to fill in cracks and such between the heatsink and the CPU IHS, nothing more. A little drop or two is all you need.

Also, if you didn't properly clean the CPU IHS and the bottom of the cooler before putting new paste on, then that may also be an issue. You need to clean them with a degreaser and then finish cleaning with relatively pure alcohol (like 95% is really good, but even down to 80% or so is decent).

Your original temps was fine. It is expected to go that high once you putting load on the cpu.
Define worse.
Clean up the old thermal paste and reapply again. Make sure you install the cpu cooler correctly. What cpu cooler you are using? What thermal paste are you using?

You can make a lot of mistakes while applying a thermal compound to your CPU. Especially spreading the compound is one of the most error-prone techniques. You easily catch some air between CPU and the cooler, little bubbles in the paste. This can cause higher temperatures.

Also cleaning the old paste is an important step which should be done with great caution! But to answer you question: I highly doubt that you messed up your CPU. You propably did mess up the thermal compound though.

by worse I meant that when doing something other than playing games the temperature can now go up to 50 degress which i know isn't a dangerous temp but is way to high for such little strain and now gaming stays around 70 degress.
