Did my graphics card die?

So I left my computer sitting on the desktop with the screensaver on for a minute, came back and the screen was black. I tried pressing control alt delete and the computer restarts, but it doesn't boot into Windows. It stays on a black screen. There's a b2 code on the motherboard, which indicates to me it might be the gpu.

Once I removed the gpu, the computer starts up just fine and boots into Windows and runs completely fine.

Did my graphics card die? It's hard to think after 3 years of use, with no indication of failure, it would just die while sitting idle on the desktop

Solution

Tell me model of your motherboard. If ur pcie really <<Watch the language please.>> it could take little area around slot and <<Watch the language please.>> up circuit and lines around him. But i dont think so. I think its ur gpu funeral RIP in peace sweet prince 2014-2017 ;((((

Can you detect any smell? So I ask you to take a smell from it. Also dismantle it and watch for brown or black places on gpu's circuit. Also did you make any changes in the BIOS?

No smell, no black spots on the backside circuitry, and no changes to bios. Just pretty dusty. It looks like one or 2 of the gold connectors (the part that fits into the PCIe slot) was a bit black, but that might be from the black dust

Which cable do you use to connect your monitor and PC? If HDMI, try to connect PC using any other cable. It could be DVI i think, but if ur card and u have a vga cable it would be good too. So connect it to any other displaying device like other monitor or TV. Write here ur results. About no indication of error - its very common incident. It can be with any of us.

P.S. If ur using not hdmi try it too. I think u understand what i meant. Test ports which u are not using.

Black spots on the corrosion free gold contacts? interesting. clean the slot connections on the card with alcohol and coffee filter, paper towel, whatever. try again
verify the card. put it in another system. sibling? friend? it'll just take a few minutes to verify. if the card works in the second system its not the card. if it still does not work, RIP.
does the fan spin uninterrupted when you flick a blade? is there any resistance to the blades at all?

You can also use eraser to wipe this ones. And if it wouldn't work even on second system ur card is dead. Real cause of it can say only computer master.

I'm using an asus maximus vi hero. Sorry if I'm not responding correctly. There doesn't seem to be a reply function through mobile browser.

I'm just baffled that this all happened so randomly while just sitting on the desktop! :??:

There weren't even any signs of graphical problems or anything! I was just playing VR and other games flawlessly the day prior to this malfunction. It all happened so fast 🙁

It often so. But, now u have a reason to upgrade ur PC :)

I was planning on making an entire new build coming the beginning of next year. I was planning on giving this pc to my wife and buying another VR headset so we can play together ❤

But if the motherboard's <<Watch the language please.>>, then that idea is down the drain lol

you could easily get an identical motherboard.

that board has three PCIe slots, have you tried them all?

Yeah, I tried the other slots. it's the graphics card for sure. I'm borrowing a friend's till I get mine replaced. Computer and games work fine with the replacement card. I guess my card just felt like dying without notice.
