I a have system with the following specs.

I9 9900k (non oc)
32 gb ddr4 3000 mhz ram
Asus z370p MB
Noctua ns-d15 (one fan installed)
Samsung evo plus 971 1 Tb
Asus gtx 1060 dual
Windows 10 Pro
Corsair RM 750 (2019 edt)

System have been running fine. However what happen tonight is that I was gaming Far Cry 5 and a hissing sound came during the loading of the intro. Which hault once the GPU load went from 80 % to 24 %. But after 30 min gameplay pc suddenly shut off and restarted. And during reboot either gpu/cpu fan roared for 5-8 sec.

Cpu/cooler/psu and ram are all new.

Before restart cpu never went over 72 C. So what could have caused this? Cpu or gpu ? And should I install the 2nd CPU fan?

Could my gpu be going bad?

Solution
Technically it is compatible, but in real life the VRMs are lacking. Even before the 9900k those boards could struggle running an 8700k. It's a budget z370 board and a mismatch for a power hungry cpu like the 9900k. Old AMD AM3+ boards suffered similar issues.

The GPU load likely dropped when the VRMs throttled the CPU and could no longer feed the GPU enough for it to run faster.

Thank you for your replies. One thing is puzzling however. All this started after I did a re-install of Windows 10. But with uefi enabled in the bios. After which a squicking sound came from case when I accessed uefi firmware settings via the Windows 10 shutdown menu.

Coincidence?
