Hello. Had a nice evening today....at store didnt have funds in cc as last cash was drawn off by credit so all that in the store line. Then (i wasnt home 4 days) one of dumb cats made a toilet in my bed and lastly(atleast for now) i plugged in power cable, turned on psu switch and press power button.....and what you know...nothing, only leds pulsing on mobo and thats it. 4 days ago still used PC, did a bit of gaming before i went away for 4 days. So i shut down PC, switched off psu button and then unplugged everything from wall socket..... So i dont have any way to measure power and other tests tho......so - did my PSU just died without any kind of prior problems or gliches?

First off, the cat would go out the door if it was me. As for your PC, it could be your PSU, motherboard, or power switch. The PSU needs a signal that comes from you case switch then through your motherboard for the PSU to fire up. You need a tester or another PC to parts test with. Testers are cheap on ebay.

Yeah....it could be the switch....you could jump it to find out....and it could also be the MB. I apologize. I got confused between this post and another one.

So being it doesn't even come on....you can't check the voltages....but you could still swap another one in....and if that doesn't work....and you jump the switch and that doesn't work.....then I'd focus on the MB.

When im tight on money everything breaks....corsair rm750 +80 lasted only abit more than 3 years..... So have not researched nor checked new stuff for pc for last 3 years.... Any suggestions on a good PSU these days...preferably modular for gtx970 i5 4690k maximus iiv hero mobo, one hdd, one ssd

If I was buying I would start with Evga. They have a reputation of having better quality PSU's than most Apevia has some good ones too. You should only need about a 550w PSU based on your specs, 650w if overclocking.

Thank you all for advices! Now just to get right as theres way too many to pick and prices are close to each other... like evga 100-130euro for 550-750w psu...same for corsair....kinda hate this part of pc repair/build or whatever includes buying new something for "her" 😀

your unit should have a 5 or 10 year warranty. i would see online if the power supply is under warranty and rma it. then it only cost you shipping fee to ship the unit back. i had my cat kill mu power supply by running over the power switch of the power strip. he hit it so in only snapped 1/2 and spiked the power supply. on your cat if it a new cat he may not know where the litter box is. they have to find and then sent mark the littler box. other issue if you have more then one cat and there both males...there going to sent mark your whole house. i would look for free nuder and spay that local to you if the mal has not been fixed.

sadly i opened it to clean about year or so ago. Even tho its a passive psu.... i had it placed upside so all dust get in it anyways...so did a routine cleaning as always ive done for last 15years and its been more than a year i something done with it...just a mild dusting. Tomorrow ill try to torubleshoot by removing everything except cpu/mobo connectors...and then we will see as i read, it could be a mobo foault too....so if i blindly buy psu and its mobo...then im stuck for a month without my precious lady..... atm all i hear is a very silent coil whine when i power on psu and only thing that lights up are maximus mobo lights and onboard buttons. Plus ive bought it here locally....and local warranty is a hell...even if its perfectly manufacturers fault, its 50/50 that they will change.... On other hand, if i had other country warranty offices hhere in Latvia, im sure they would do everything to help out as it seems they care about they product....except Latvia shops.

A 650w should be fine unless you get a 1080 and push some massive overclocks on the RAM, CPU, and GPU at the same time.

UPDATE. Ok i found a very cheapo multimeter at home and followed instructions with paper clip too... So i plugged in 24 pin and one molex adapter for fan, shorted with paper clip and turned on psu....fan is spinning. After that theres a video about testing the connection on molex......so one side where should be 5V it shows 6.5x and other wheres 12V it keeps upping to more than 15V.....ok 12V one goes over 20V. Ill try to find some walktrough about testing 24pin one so to be a bit more sure...but if theres over voltage so thats a PSU for sure....as i really dont want to part away with my maximus :)

Ok both sides keep upping voltage 5V side goes past 7V too...

So to summarise - All my room has a very strong pee odor, Molex connector V is goin way over 12V and 5V. Tested orange 3.3V or 24pin too and it goes over 6V(cant get this secured in as those pins are smaller than tester tips....but it goes up.

So after all this even tho shorting with paper clip did turn on fan from molex...but is V is keep upping up my PSU is broken and im safe to buy new one?

Thank you in advance and i really do like if something is wrong with PC as i learn something new...sadly its very costly discoveries....

a quick tip use the probes from the top of the connector. the connector and crimp pins will hold the probes in place. trying to hit the pin with a large probe not fun. also on power supplys they can act funny if there no load on them. if the mb power on put the cables back and then check to see if the voltage are going up. for the cat smell...use 1/2 white vinagar and water. you have to break down the urion with a weak acid wash...same goes for tomato juice and skunks.

Got my new psu, tear apart pc and put it back from scrach......nothing smells funny or some indication of bloat/burn or how its called. So put everything back together and get same ****. Mobo all leds turn on and thats it, no indication of PC turning on even for a 1/10second when i press power button......so next this and prolly only one is my maximus hero vii dead?

I tried removing rams and powering on, even disconnected vga/drives....nothing. So any suggestions if there is any easy way to test if mobo is dead as it will be cheaper to get a new mobo(ok, not so fancy like this) than send to some tech guy ...

NVM..... that damn machine just started working and worst thing is, I DONT KNOW WHY!!!! Istarted pushing buttons on mobo and looks like when i pressed keybot button- red led turned on and after i get to the power button on mobo....it ****ing started..... now i really dont know whats fault it is and if its safe to try and put back the old PSU....

Great job testing the psu.

So yes ...replace the psu. Hopefully the high voltages didn't cause damage.
