Hi guys, I am a first time builder here. Need help with windows 8.1.

So did normal install and clean install matters on a brand new custom builded pc?
I see that clean install wipes all data in a hard drives but i have a brand new samsung 850 evo 250gb to install my windows 8.1 (64 bit). So does it matter? If i have a brand new ssd? Will if effect anything?

And should i buy windows 8.1 oem or retail? i will use my pc mainly for gaming. I heard that one of those version can't be used to upgrade is it true?

And when i upgrade windows 8.1 to windows 10( I am planning to do that in the future) should i do a clean install? Does many people do a clean install or just a normal?

Solution
Well, a new SSD is already as clean as it will ever be since there is nothing on it.

So just remember to format it, and let the install process do its thing.

Before the install, go into the motherboard BIOS, and find the AHCI setting, and enable it.

After Windows is installed, install the Magician program that is on the Samsung CD, and then run it, and you will find optimization settings in there. Select performance optimizations, and it will setup Windows with the right settings to be fast.

Just do a custom full install.

You can upgrade 8.1 to 10 on OEM and RETAIL versions of windows.

The difference is that the OEM version is non-transferable. This means that say in 3 years you buy a motherboard/cpu of the latest intel chip; then by Microsoft's license agreement you would need a new license as your current license (both the win 8.1 and the win 10 you upgraded it to) would be tied to your current motherboard. A RETAIL license is transferable, just as long as it is only on 1 computer at any given point in time.

So did many people do a clean install for upgrades or just normal install for upgrades? And when i upgrade to like windows 10 in the future if i do a clean install will it wipe all of my ssd,hdd data or it will just wipe the ssd that i currently installed windows?

I mean like i want to upgrade from 8.1 to 10 did i need to buy oem or retail for windows 10 for upgrade.
And did many people do clean install when they upgrade? And if let say i want to upgrade to windows 10 and i do a clean install will all of my hdd,ssd data be wiped out or just the ssd that i currently have installed with windows 8.1? I don't want to redownload/reinstall my games when i upgrade windows.

When you do the free upgrade to WIndows 10, let the upgrade happen, and then you will be able to download a .ISO image which you can burn to a disc, and then use that to create a clean install.

I mean when i upgrade windows 10 after the free upgrade period i will just buy a disc for windows 10 just like how i buy with windows 8.1. Should i do a clean install? And will the clean install wipe out all of my ssd,hdd data or it will just wipe out my ssd that currently has windows 8.1 installed? My point is that i don't want to redownload/reinstall my games. If it will just wipe the ssd that i have windows 8.1 installed that i will just put windows 8.1 into that ssd.

But i heard that normal install will cause many problems?Did many people actually clean install when they upgrade their OS?

Do not believe everything you hear or read. Especially when it comes to computers. There are 7 billion humans on this planet, and 20 billion computer experts.

When going to Windows 10 by using the free upgrade, you must have either Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 installed to do the free upgrade. As soon as you have completed the upgrade and are running Windows 10 on your system, then you can download the Windows 10 ISO, and burn the Windows 10 disc from that, then you can restart your system, and do a clean install.

I mean i will not get windows 10 for free. I will buy the windows 10 disc just like how i buy my windows 8.1 and i don't want to buy windows 10 now because some games didn't support it or will be having problems. So when i upgrade to windows 10 after like one year should i do clean install or just a normal install?

So should i generally do clean install when i upgrade my OS? And will it delete all of my games and other programs files or it will just delete the files in my ssd that i currently had windows installed?( Just wanted to know because i really don't want to redownload/reinstall my games).

So it will even wipe the hdd,ssd that i didn't had windows installed but just have my games and programs only?Didn't clean install just need to format/delete the ssd that i wanted to install windows? then how could it delete my games and programs that is in another ssd, hdd?

Anything that is installed in your system normally needs entries in the registry. When you erase the boot drive, the registry is gone. So no matter where software is, if it needs entries in the registry, you will be required to reinstall those programs. There are a few things that never use the registry. I think Blizzards Games are that way. I play World of Warcraft, and I am fairly certain that it never touches the registry. So that makes me think that none of their games do. There are also some utility programs that also do not use it. But most programs do. So by reinstalling the programs after the clean install, you add their entries back into the registry so that they will work again.

Then i would like to ask did you do clean install when you upgrade your os? Is normal install good?I think if people do clean install they will backup their games and everything right?
